A Merry Mexico Wedding

Mathew and Courtney always knew they wanted to say “I do” with their feet in the sand, so none of their family and friends were surprised when the couple decided to host a destination wedding in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Luckily, a wedding away was the perfect fit for this Texas couple. “We chose to do a destination wedding because we wanted an atmosphere that was a bit more relaxed than a traditional wedding and we thought it would be a blast to have a three day vacation with our family and closest friends,” recalls the bride.

Luckily, the couple’s plans paid off and they were joined by 90 of their nearest and dearest come W-Day. As for the “where,” Mathew and Courtney did take a bit of a gamble. “We chose Isla Mujeres after hearing from several different people that it was a fantastic destination,” says Courtney. “We wanted a beach wedding, but we also wanted a place that was not extremely touristy. We never went to Isla prior to the wedding, so I’m glad our friends were right!”

Hosting a destination wedding does come with some difficulties. “The only issues we ran into were the logistics of bringing everything we needed over from Texas (wedding favors, programs, bridesmaid and groomsman gifts, etc.),” says the bride. “Our solution to this problem was enlisting some of our friends to help us check bags to get everything we needed to Mexico.”

On the ground, the couple trusted in their wedding planners to get everything done. “Using a wedding planning team made planning a destination wedding so easy,” explains Courtney. “They handled the vendors and any questions/concerns I had along the way. I imagine I had one of the more stress-free wedding experience of any of my friends thus far.”

Because Isla Mujeres is an island off the coast of Cancun, the travel for them and their guests did take some extra effort. “Getting to Isla Mujeres requires flying to Cancun and then taking a ferry over to the island,” says the bride. “To help our guests out, we contacted a transportation service and arranged for all of our guests to shuttle together to the ferry from the airport, based on their flight times into Cancun. This made everyone’s lives much easier, as there was transportation waiting for them at the airport. It was also very helpful for guests who were not seasoned travelers and made their experience much less stressful.”

In the end, Courtney and Mathew got the laid-back, fun wedding they had always wished for. To help you achieve the same, the bride has some final words of advice: “Make sure you plan a wedding that suits you and your fiancé’s personalities. Neither of us are big fans of traditional wedding formalities and we decided very early on that we wanted our wedding to feel more like a big celebration with our family and our closest friends than a wedding. We could not have been happier with the results. Everyone who came to Mexico told us it was the most fun wedding they had ever attended!”
