Your love story is one of a kind. What better way to represent your unique bond than with a unique diamond engagement ring? As you may know, however, when irresponsibly traded, diamonds have been known to fund rebellions and wars in many African nations. We spoke with Kristen Lawler-Trustey, PR Manager at De Beers Forevermark, to learn more about how you as a consumer can make better choices when shopping for an engagement ring.

First things first, Kristen Lawler-Trustey recommends you do your research. Now, you’ve likely heard this more times than you can count, but it’s a massive part of what will lead you to the perfect, responsibly sourced ring. The main question to ask during your search: “Is the company actively working to not only diminish its impact but ensure a bright future for the land and people supplying its diamonds?”

Lawler-Trustey tells us De Beers Forevermark, for example, focuses on four pillars: “standing with women and girls, protecting the natural world, partnering for thriving communities, and leading an ethical industry.” In fact, Lawler-Trustey says that “for every acre of land impacted by mining activities, De Beers sets aside six acres for conservation – equating to approximately 500,000 acres of land protected for wildlife and biodiversity.” In addition, the company partnered with UN Women in 2017 and is currently a part of the HeForShe Alliance in pursuit of achieving gender parity in their workforce by 2030.

The final piece of advice Kristen Lawler-Trustey leaves with us is to “trust your gut” when it comes to picking out that perfect diamond. “It’s a great idea to brush up on the 4C’s so you understand what a sales associate is talking about,” she says, “but also know that the 4Cs aren’t everything. Two diamonds can have the same 4C’s and look very different. There are many other characteristics of a diamond-like symmetry, polish and durability that contribute to its overall beauty.”
