Today’s real-life destination wedding couple are two teachers who took their love to the Outer Banks. They were lovely enough to share some of their wedding details and insider advice to planning the perfect destination wedding. When Nikki and Brian got engaged they knew Duck, North Carolina was the perfect sentimental setting for their nuptials.
Nikki’s family vacations to the Outer Banks every summer so the locale conjures up a myriad of happy memories for this bride and was an easy pick for where to spend one of the most special weekends in her life. As always, the couple’s nearest and dearest were along for the ride.
“The majority of our friends and family were super excited about a destination wedding,” said the couple. “We knew we wanted a small wedding and everyone we know and love made it down to the beach for our special weekend.”
Her and Brian chose The Saltaire as the setting for both their ceremony and reception. The couple said “I Do,” in the property’s garden next to a romantic fountain. Nikki’s bright pink and green color scheme was a vibrant addition to the summer scenery of North Carolina. The easy-breezy tone carried into the bridesmaid’s dresses by Vineyard Vines. The playful pattern livened up the wedding and complimented the bouquets perfectly.
The wedding weekend was sentimental from the start – Nikki wore her mother’s wedding dress which only required a few alterations to modernize it a bit. Thankfully Nikki is as crafty as they come, because she and Brian planned their wedding in less than 9 months – a short engagement by today’s standards. The bride designed and created the centerpieces, place cards and table cards.
Nikki used multiple sources for inspiration including the good ol’ internet and yours truly, Destination I Do Magazine. (Aw, thanks Nikki!)Looking at lots of seaside destination weddings online helped the couple to come up with DIY ideas and make decisions on what the feel of their wedding would be. Nikki and Brian don’t regret having a destination wedding one bit and have a major reason why most couples should follow in their footsteps – money!
“I think in the end we actually spent less money by having a destination wedding,” said the couple. “We are from an affluent area and wedding in the Northeast are usually very expensive. By having a destination wedding our [guest] numbers were slightly lower.”
Nikki and Brian’s favorite part about having a destination wedding is also why they truly recommend a similar experience to other engaged couples out there.
“A destination wedding is a great idea for brides who want real quality time with friends and family,” said the couple. “By having our wedding in the Outer Banks we got to spend a whole weekend with all the people we cherish the most.”
