While planning their wedding, New York City residents Yuri and Michael quickly realized they could make their wedding budget go much further outside the city. For them, a destination wedding was the way to go because not only would they be able to stay within their budget, the wedding would be far more intimate.

After a lot of research and consideration, Yuri and Michael chose Los Cabos, Mexico as the ideal spot for their nuptials. The couple was concerned about travel expenses for their guests, but decided Cabo had the best accommodations. Yuri and Michael were also able to work out deals with hotels, cabs and airfare for their loved ones. After much research, the Hilton Los Cabos was the setting for both the couple’s ceremony and reception.

Los Cabos was also a perfect fit because of the myriad of activities the couple and their guests had to choose from. Marlin fishing, A.T.V. rides, snorkeling, scuba-diving, horseback riding, zip-lining and golf all kept the couple and their guests busy on the days leading up to the wedding.

Yuri is an artist and was thus a very hands-on bride. She planned the entire wedding on her own and had her work cut out for her after the couple had to move up their wedding date by three months! She made all the invitations, place-cards and programs herself. The couple also put together welcome bags for all their guests which included an events schedule, bottles of water, snacks and treats.

By arriving to their destination a few days early, the couple had time to run to the local Costco to buy all the supplies for their welcome bags. This saved them the trouble of having to transport all their goodies from the states. There was one issue with their Cabo locale that the couple couldn’t have predicted.

“There was hardly any cell phone reception and it was difficult to get around when we were trying to execute wedding plans,” says Yuri. “My husband and I resolved the issue by getting walkie-talkies from Costco and assigning them to essential bridal party members.”

Come W-day there were a few complications, but nothing this couple couldn’t handle. For example, Yuri was really dissatisfied with her hair and makeup. Thankfully her talented bridesmaids came to the rescue and when the time came to walk down the aisle, Yuri was looking and feeling fabulous.

The couple had purchased flip-flops for all of their guests as wedding favors, but unfortunately, they were confiscated at the airport. Customs saw the gobs of flip-slops as undocumented merchandise. The couple recommends being sure to research your destination’s airport custom policies in order to avoid this kind of snafu. In the end, the couple was able to be lighthearted about it and simply enjoyed their gorgeous destination wedding.

“Somewhere in Mexico, a bunch of airport employees have 40 pairs of flip-flops with our wedding initials and date on them.”
