Destination Wedding on the High Seas: Come Aboard the Love BoatWords by Courtney Kellar Words by Courtney Cox

I’ve been this blog’s main squeeze for about a year and a half now and today’s real-life wedding is a first for me – a cruise destination wedding! Krystle and Daniel are two graphic artists who hail from Toronto, Ontario. For them, a destination wedding aboard a cruise ship was the perfect way to celebrate their special day somewhere unique while creating a great atmosphere they and their guests would never forget.
As anyone who has been on a cruise can attest, the trip isn’t all sailing the seven seas. Aboard Royal Caribbean’s “Oasis of the Seas” the couple and their guests got to enjoy various trips ashore to enjoy and explore different Caribbean islands. It also served as a photo op for the couple and a special way to document their wedding journey.
“We saw the Oasis cruise as an opportunity to experience a great family vacation while, at the same time, celebrating one of the greatest moments in our lives together,” says Krystle.
Planning a wedding aboard a cruise ship did come with a unique set of challenges. “Not being able to see the venue or flowers before even boarding the ship and solely relying on pictures made our experience a little stressful,” says Krystle. “However, after everything was said and done, we were extremely happy with how everything turned out and would not have done it any other way.”
The biggest speed bump the couple had to overcome actually didn’t occur on board, but en route to the destination wedding of their dreams. “Having to walk around the airport and go through customs with a massive gown bag really turned out to be quite challenging for my husband and I, but we made it through and received a lot of great well wishes from fellow passengers,” says Krystle.
In the end, the couple exchanged vows surrounded by their loved ones and smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic. Krystle and Daniel’s wedding photos on the deck of the ship scream destination and display the beauty of the ocean as a photographic backdrop. The couple couldn’t have been happier with their destination wedding experience and have some words of advice for other couples considering the same route.
“Choosing to have a destination wedding was a choice that we will always recommend. Cruise’s, resorts and hotels will almost always have everything you need right on site. From the chairs, to the decorations, to the overall ease and peace of mind that Daniel and I experienced during the planning of our wedding – we would do it all again in a heartbeat! Vow renewals perhaps?"
