Kerri had a clear vision of what she wanted her wedding to be. Ever since she and her future husband visited Mackinac Island, Michigan in 2008, she knew that’s where she would say “I do.” Not only was it a convenient location for their guests, but it fulfilled all of the bride’s wants and needs.

“I knew that I wanted the sound of water in the background, hundreds of beautiful flowers, amazing scenery and the sun shining incorporated into my wedding day,” says Kerri. “I was so confident about Mackinac Island that only two days after [Matt] proposed, I was already booking our venue locations.”

This couple was right to go with their gut and the wedding that resulted after months of planning was exactly what they had always wanted. “The sounds of horses galloping, the smell of fudge in the air and tandem bikes on every street corner, all made [Mackinac] the perfect fit for our wedding,” recalls Kerri. “I loved the timeless island feel and really wanted that to be portrayed in my wedding.”

The couple incorporate their island theme into a DIY project for their destination wedding save the dates. The bride ordered mini bottles which she filled with sand and a message requesting their guests to “save the date.” Not only did they send a message in a bottle, but they went so far as to soak the corks in coconut oil so the tropical scent would conjure up an island feel for their guests.

This traditional couple originally planned on getting married in a Catholic Church, but after they saw their venue’s gazebo, they knew that was the spot in which they wanted to exchange vows. “Therefore, we decided to have two ceremonies,” says Kerri. “On our actual wedding day we got married in the gazebo with all of our family and friends. The next morning, we had another ceremony at a Catholic Church with our family present.”

This is a great idea if it’s important to you or your family that you hold a church ceremony, but you also want an outdoor affair. Have two ceremonies and you’ll get the best of both worlds! Kerri has other advice for couple’s planning a destination wedding. “Plan early, know what you want and don’t be afraid to speak up. Also, stay organized and, though it’s hard, try not to get overwhelmed; it’s supposed to be fun!”
