This Washington, DC couple had no doubts about having a destination wedding. The only thing up for discussion was where in the world they would say “I do.” “Since both Alex and I come from different backgrounds, we didn’t want to choose Spain or El Salvador as the location of our wedding,” says Lorena. “So, we set out to do a destination wedding in a place we could identify with and we could make our own.”

In the end, this couple found the perfect destination for them, and it happened in the simplest way. “I stumbled on a wedding that took place in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico while flipping through a wedding magazine,” says Lorena. “I saw the colors and the gorgeous architecture of this beautiful city and I knew immediately that I wanted to get married there.”

After doing more research online, our bride Lorena was even more convinced that Puerto Rico was the place for her and husband-to-be to get married. “…I bought a ticket and headed to San Juan to look at locations and get a feel for the city,” says Lorena. “It had everything we wanted and more. Puerto Rico has the charm of old Spain, the flavor of Latin America and the convenience of the United States.”

Alex and Lorena have become strong advocates for destination weddings in general and have helpful advice for other couples considering a wedding away. “When you choose a destination wedding it [should be] because you are particularly attracted to the beauty of that location, then that extends to the wedding and everything around it,” says Lorena. “We loved the Cathedral and Hacienda so much just as they were that we wanted them to shine. It made the planning much easier when the surroundings of your ceremony/reception are so beautiful.”

Come W-day, this couple achieved everything they wanted and more. Not only that – but they saved money along the way. According to them, they saved thousands of dollars by getting married in Puerto Rico instead of Washington, DC. However, that isn’t even their favorite part.

“The best thing about our destination wedding was the ability to spend time with our loved ones in a relaxed environment. Since everyone was way from home, people were a lot more relaxed and in vacation mode. It allowed us to spend time with our friends and family while creating memories to last a lifetime.”
