Destination Wedding Cabo: A Colorful Dream Come TrueWords by Courtney Kellar Words by Courtney Cox

Allison and Louis hail from San Diego, California and had no doubts about having a destination wedding. “We wanted to keep the planning simple and [on our wedding day] wanted to feel warm, tropical and free with our toes in the sand,” recalls the bride. The couple knew Los Cabos, Mexico was the destination for them and only needed to pick the venue of their dreams.
The couple did research online before making a scouting trip to check out all their potential venues. In the end, Louis and Allison chose Melia Cabo Real because of its enthusiastic wedding coordinators and the convenience of an all-inclusive. Because the hotel was an all-inclusive, it was a simple way for the couple to keep costs down for their guests.
Not only did these love birds achieve the destination wedding of their dreams, but they saved some pennies in the process. “I liked that our costs were laid out for us from the beginning,” recalls Allison. “We picked ‘Package C’ and really didn’t deviate much from that cost. Most of our additions were DIY so there were no additional charges. I just had to get creative to get everything I wanted within the constraints of a ‘package wedding.’”
Looking through their W-day photos, it’s clear that this couple’s DIY efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Allison created her bridesmaids’ bouquets by combining locally purchased maracas and Mexican paper flowers. Not only was this unique, but it meant her girlfriends had a wilt-free way to remember their time in Mexico. The couple also got creative in creating memories. “Instead of hiring a videographer, we handed out Flip Cams to a few of our skilled videographer friends,” says Allison.
After the cake was cut and the couple said “I do,” they reflected back on their original reasons for choosing a destination wedding and knew they had succeeded. “My favorite thing about destination weddings is the unity of the guests by weekend’s end,” recalls the bride. “All of our family and friends had now spent time getting to know each other. This not only made for a great wedding reception, but also for us as a couple moving forward. I love that we’re all one big, happy family now.”
