For Joy and Kris, there was never any question as to where they wanted to get married. The couple couldn’t see themselves saying “I do” anywhere other than their favorite place on earth: Kauai, Hawaii. They hail from British Columbia and since destination weddings aren’t as common there, a lot of guests were thrown by the idea. However, the couple stuck to their guns and what resulted was an intimate affair with guests continually gushing about the beautiful event and surroundings.

After seeing Kris and Joy’s wedding photos, there’s no doubt Kauai suits them. The couple struggled initially to find a house on the North Shore which would accommodate them and all their guests. Once they found a house they loved, they had to compromise by holding their reception outdoors instead of indoors. While marriage undoubtedly requires some comprising, the couple credits their dream wedding to their wedding planner, Lanae Anakalea.

“Our wedding planner was amazing,” recalls Joy. “As a planner, she was forever organized and choreographing, but as a person we also really love and trusted her. Not using a wedding planner would have been so much more stressful. [Also,] choose vendors you like as people, since you have to spend the best day of your life with them anyway.”

Solid advice since the couple’s W-day ended up running so smoothly. All of their guests arrived at the same time due to the bride negotiating a group promotion code with Alaska Airlines. Kris and Joy’s laid back style was perfect for the beaches of Kauai. The bride and groom know they made the right decision because they continue to watch their wedding video again and again.

Joy has some final words of advice for other couples considering a destination wedding: “Invite only the people that truly know you, so you can enjoy their time without feeling spread too thin. Also, pick a location you love and feel a connection to so you can go back there and relive the moment again and again.”
