Kristy and Matt are originally from Alberta, Canada, so when it came down to planning their destination wedding, they wanted a location which was warm enough to hold the ceremony outdoors. The first place which sprung into their heads, naturally, was Hawaii. The couple had slight qualms on taking the ceremony off-shore because some guests weren't happy with the price, but in the end they decided they couldn't make everyone happy and opted for a destination wedding.

"Hawaii was always a front runner for our destination," Kristy says. "When we stumbled upon the Haiku Mill, we were sold! It is the most beautiful setting we could have ever imagined." Having picked the perfect destination wedding venue, the couple hired a wedding planner to take care of the rest.

With the minor details taken care of, Kristy and Matt were able to tackle the guest accommodations. They searched far and wide to find the cheapest airfare and hotel prices so their loved ones could indulge in paradise without burning a hole through their wallets. The couple's closest family and friends were able to share in the love birds' big day and all while having a mini-vacation.

Although the couple ran into some difficulties with the food service and the transportation home, their wedding planner came to the rescue with backup plans and solutions. "I would certainly recommend a wedding planner, especially for a destination wedding," Kristy says. "It was great to have someone local working on our behalf. That, combined with their experience dealing with local vendors, we feel our planner was the key to creating the wedding we dreamed of!"

After all was said and done, the couple had spent about the same amount on a destination wedding as they would have with a traditional wedding in Alberta. When it comes to planning your destination wedding, Kristy warns, "Things happen! Booking errors, cancellations, family drama… not everything goes perfectly, but in the end it will be the perfect day. It can be so easy to get stressed out, but we learned that sometimes things just happen and are out of your control!"
