Destination Wedding Do-Over: A Dream Ten-Year Vow Renewal

Destination wedding couples come in all shapes and sizes, so to speak: couples looking to elope, say “I do” in a favorite childhood destination, or simply get away with their nearest and dearest. Pete and Andi are a unique pair who turned their ten year wedding anniversary into a major do-over. “We got married in Tampa in 2002, and since it poured down rain on what was supposed to be an outside wedding, we chose to have a vow renewal outside on our ten year anniversary,” says Andi.

The longtime lovebirds knew just the place – Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. “Over the last several years, Hammock Beach has become a favorite summer vacation spot where we go with our best friends and their families; it was the perfect place to get married again!” recalls the bride. Andi works within the bridal industry and took full advantage of getting to design her dream wedding all over again.

The couple decided on a “lavender and lemon” theme and they had lots of helpers on hand to make their vision a reality. “Being that I am a wedding photographer in Tampa, I always see the creative ideas that couples put together at their weddings , so it inspired me to do the same,” says Andi. “My maid of honor from my wedding ten years ago coordinated all of the design elements for me as that is her passion/hobby. It was fun to shop and create ideas for the weekend together. We shopped at thrift stores and consignment shops for elements to do with our theme. We spray painted all the containers copper, ordered lavender online and I designed the menus and invites.”

Not only did Andi have help from a talented and driven former maid of honor, but also from a college sorority sister: Kelly from Pure Sugar Studios. Ironically, the first wedding Andi, our bride, ever shot was Kelly’s several years ago. While their destination vow renewal was special for lots of reasons, Andi and Pete feel that this time around they really nailed the atmosphere and details.
“We had our wedding at home ten years ago with 185 people in a hotel ballroom,” recalls the couple. “We love it, but this is more ‘us’ at this stage in our lives. Small, intimate and very relaxed with only our closest friends and family who are an active part in our lives. Even though it was a small event, about 35 people, we wanted all the details to be beautiful and reflective of our personalities.”

This long time couple has now planned two weddings and so have some very valuable advice for other destination wedding couples. “Inevitably something will go wrong on your wedding day, like a torrential rainstorm, but no one will notice unless you make a big deal over it. Everyone there loves and supports you, so soak it in and enjoy every minute of it – and if it does rain, do it over in ten years like we did!”
