For Renée and Mario, the number one wedding priority was a warm, outdoor setting overlooking the ocean. It could be argued that this Los Angeles couple could have gotten that in their own backyard, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, the couple opted for a destination wedding in Los Cabos, Mexico. They quickly decided on their chosen venue, the Westin Resort & Spa, Los Cabos. “We fell in love with the Westin; the resort is literally carved out of a mountain and jets right out into the ocean,” recalls Renée and Mario.

With family scattered all over the country, the couple was just as thrilled about getting their guests together as they were about the actual wedding. “We were so excited at the idea of having all of our friends and family in one gorgeous place for a week and that we would be able to enjoy their company the whole week instead of just one day,” says Renée. “Many of them live out of state and having them all there at once was an amazing gift in itself. Everyone who came was able to turn it into an extended stay and make a vacation out of it.”

During the planning process, Renée and Mario were fortunate enough to be able to make a couple of trips to Cabo to meet with potential vendors and their wedding coordinator with the resort. “We visited a few times during the planning process, but we knew how important it would be for us to see everything firsthand in the days leading up to the wedding, so we flew out a week ahead of the wedding and worked with our coordinator and vendors every day until the wedding,” recalls Renée. “[Our coordinator] was all over the details and so organized that we didn’t have much to worry about! Having a wedding planner is that way to go on the most special day of your life.”

These newlyweds were equally as organized in their do-it-yourself projects. “We created all of our own stationery: save the dates, invitations, ceremony programs, donation cards, escort cards, menus – we even created our own logo with our first initials which we used across all our stationery,” says the couple. “Using our own creativity in this way helped cut the costs of having these done professionally and it made all of these keepsakes that much more special knowing we created them together, rather than using a template from a website.”

Renée and Mario no doubt achieved the destination wedding of their dream through careful planning, creative inspiration and a little help along the way. These newlyweds have some final words of advice for other couples considering a destination wedding. “Just try to stay in the moment and really soak in everything that’s happening. Even if you have the best photographer (we did!), you’ll really want those personal memories, those precious moments of clarity amidst the gorgeous chaos.”
