Natalie and Dan are a Southern California couple who chose to have a destination wedding for the most common of reasons. However, their lovely event was anything but run-of-the-mill. “We wanted to interact with our guests and have time to celebrate and enjoy the evening together…to really take it all in,” says the bride. “I don’t think a large wedding affords you that luxury.”
When the couple presented the idea of getting married in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to their families, there was only one request from their parents: a hometown reception. “The wedding being in Cabo was contingent upon a reception back in California,” says Natalie. “Our parents wanted our extended family and friends to have an opportunity to also celebrate with us. That request was not a problem for us! We were happy to celebrate twice! We had a second reception at my parent’s house a couple weeks after we returned from Cabo.”
So, why Cabo? “We understood that people were going to take time away from work and/or children to be with us and we wanted to make it as accessible as possible,” says the couple. “We chose Cabo not only because of its amazing scenery, hospitality and weather, but also because it’s only a 2.5 hour flight from Orange County. For us, choosing Cabo was the best of both worlds.”
Thanks to the couple’s wedding planner, Leslie with One Happenings Weddings & Events, their dream wedding went off without a hitch come W-day. However, the couple explains they couldn’t have done it on their own. “A wedding coordinator is a must. Hooking up with a local wedding planner was fabulous because we could leverage her knowledge of the city and her trusted vendor partners.”
After all was said and done, the couple says they spent about the same amount of money they would have on a hometown wedding. “The total number of guests was less, but we extended invitations to the rehearsal dinner to just about everyone, not just the bridal party. Attendees were family members or life-long friends and we wanted them to be a part of it all. So, any money we saved by having a smaller destination wedding was spent on other activities and events! In the end, it was all worth it and we’d do it again in a heartbeat! Cabo allowed for time to sit, relax and enjoy a full weekend surrounded by your closest loved ones. Strangers became friends and families had a chance to mix and mingle.”
These happy newlyweds have some final words of advice for other couples planning their own dream destination wedding. “Take time to enjoy the entire experience. Most likely your guests will never be in the same place, at the same time again. Here they are…all the people you love the most, there to celebrate with you.”Vendors: Photographer: Amy Bennett Photography, Ceremony/Reception Site: Hacienda Cocina y Cantina, Wedding Planner: Leslie Bost with One Happenings Weddings & Events, Florist: Mishka Designs, Hair & Makeup: Neysa Berman with Blanc Studios, Music: http://amybennettphoto.com/homeDJ Mijares
