A Celebration in Costa RicaWords by Taylor Wilson

Searching for a new country to add to their list of adventure, Nicole and Michael chose Costa Rica as the tropical locale for their wedding day vows. “A huge part of the foundation in building our relationship has been traveling,” explains the bride. Two years after the couple met, they bought a boat and cruised from British Columbia to the coast of California with a two-year stop in the Bay Area where they lived on their boat. Travel clearly plays an integral part in the couple’s relationship, so there was no better way to say “I Do” than with a destination wedding.
The couple’s family and friends expected nothing less from the two when they announced their decision to wed abroad. Nicole and Michael gave them a year and a half notice so they could start planning their travel arrangements, which was greatly appreciated. Before they knew it, Nicole and Michael began their experience of a lifetime with their loved ones in a country full of beauty, wildlife, culture and adventure.
With the help of Karen Ogden of Tropical Occasions, planning their wedding was a breeze. The couple didn’t even step foot in the country until six days before their wedding, yet still managed to pull off such a stunning event. “We loved the idea of creating special memories in a new place we’d never been. The wedding planner and I corresponded through thousands of emails throughout the year and several Skype calls,” says Nicole. They also used resources like Pinterest to exchange creative ideas and keep everything consistent.
Although Costa Rica is by no means a "cheap" place to host a wedding, the couple kept costs close to what they would have been in the States by consolidating their guest list to 35 people, which provided an intimate setting. By hosting a destination wedding, they were able to incorporate their love of travel as well as create an entire “wedding week” to extend the celebrations with their loved ones. “There is such a magical element about being able to say your vows in a foreign country where you’ve just created these wonderful memories with your closest friends and family. We wanted our guests to feel like they were swept away into paradise where they could share in the magic Costa Rica has to offer,” says the bride. The couple achieved just that in this magical land, as they were able to create the most precious moments through elements they cherish most.
