A Charming Catalina Island Event

Ivonn and Brad had a very specific reason for choosing their destination of Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. “I grew up on Catalina Island,” says the bride. “Brad had been visiting the island with me for years and he really wanted all our family and friends from San Diego to visit the island and see where I grew up. Although this was a destination wedding, it felt like a local wedding for me because I grew up there.”

As the couple predicted, their friends and family were thrilled with the couple’s decision to host a destination wedding on charming Catalina Island. “Most of them had never been there before and were really excited to have an excuse to spend some time there,” explains the couple. “All guests headed to the island through either the Catalina Express or the Catalina Flyer. The Newport Flyer had an awesome Groupon running and we were able to get a lot of our guests to purchase them ahead of time. Luckily, we didn’t run into any travel issues with any guests.”

While planning a wedding on an island is lovely, it does raise the bar logistically. “It was not the easiest thing in the world to plan a destination wedding,” says Ivonn. “There were added costs for shipping decorations and also frustrating moments not being close by when problems arose. [For example,] our DJ cancelled last minute and it was really hard to find someone who was willing to travel to a destination wedding. We were lucky that we had some friends and family at our destination and they helped with various odds and ends when we couldn’t be there.”

Another issue the couple ran into was with their venue. During the planning process, the venue had a lot of internal turn-over and it made communication tough for Ivonn and Brad. With a lengthy wedding planning process, it’s important to be prepared and be patient when it comes to your vendors. However, in the end, everything came together come W-day and Ivonn and Brad were thrilled with their event.

“The planning process can be long and grueling, but after all is said and done it will be worth it. Planning a destination wedding is especially difficult, but it will guarantee that you and your guests have an experience you will never forget. Most importantly, focus on you and your fiancé and the love you have for each other and everything will work out exactly like it’s supposed to.”
