A Sweet & Simple Mexican SoiréeWords by Courtney Kellar

As avid travelers, Chelsea and Scott knew for many years where they would eventually get married. “My sister got married in Ixtapa seven years ago,” recalls the bride. “It was my and Scott’s first trip to Mexico together [and] we loved how laid-back and easy it was for [my sister and her husband] to plan and execute [their wedding]. Since then Scott and I have been to Mexico together seven times, Isla Mujeres three times. It became our favorite place and we knew we had to bring all of our family and friends there.”
Chelsea and Scott truly used her sister’s wedding as inspiration and tried to keep their own destination wedding as simple and stress-free as possible. The laid-back couple did everything themselves and knew what it was going to take for them to be happy come W-day. “We went to Isla [four months prior to the wedding], rented a golf cart and drove around the island looking at different locations,” says the couple. “We didn’t have a wedding planner and a lot of these places didn’t have websites, so we had to do it all on our own.” After scouting out Club Playa Mexico, the couple knew it was the spot for them.
Chelsea and Scott managed to hammer-out the majority of their wedding details before leaving Isla Mujeres and arrived ten days prior to their wedding to spend quality time with friends and family relaxing on the beach. Isla Mujeres is a beautiful island off the coast of Cancun, Mexico and is a short, scenic ferry ride from the mainland. The couple’s guests didn’t run into any major travel issues and arrived happy, healthy and ready to celebrate!
Keeping with their mantra of stress-free and simple, Chelsea and Scott definitely acted outside of the box on the morning of their wedding day. “The day of the wedding Scott and I got on a golf cart and went to the local flower shop,” recalls Chelsea. “I said I wanted to spend ‘X’ amount of money and they let me have the store to myself choosing all the flowers I wanted. We then drove them to the location where the owner set them all up for us.” No doubt this is a level of service and a scenario that might be hard to find outside of this small, Mexican town.
For the couple’s ceremony, they exchanged vows on Club Playa Mexico's small, private beach surrounded by their closest family and friends. The group stood by as the sun set and Chelsea and Scott became “man and wife.” Afterward, the close-knit group celebrated with a laid-back reception decorated with the bright flowers Scott and Chelsea purchased earlier in the day.
While it’s certainly possible to plan a big, detail-full destination wedding from the comfort of your far-away home, it’s nice to see that some couples, like Chelsea and Scott, stick to their guns about their vision and what would make them most happy. “Every night there was something different leading up to the wedding day,” says the couple. “We were together at the all-inclusive resort together eating, drinking, swimming and snorkeling. At night we would have big dinners and then walk to the downtown area [of Isla Mujeres] – it was so great.”
