A Sweet Jamaican Destination Wedding

When Gloria and Basil began planning their wedding they had two main objectives: a guest list which wasn’t too large and something all of their guests could get excited about. As it turns out, a destination wedding to Montego Bay, Jamaica was the perfect solution. “Attending a local wedding seems to be a chore for most people,” says the bride. “No one is ever excited about a local wedding that isn’t their own. People would much rather say ‘I’m going to Jamaica!’ than ‘I have to go to a wedding this weekend.’ [A destination wedding] narrows [your wedding] down to guests who actually want to be there.”

Luckily for the couple, their plan worked and all of their guests were thrilled about their choice to host a wedding away in Jamaica. “…everyone was very supportive,” says the couple. “We know our parents aren’t really big on beach destinations, but they never once had any objections.” To keep things as simple as possible, they couple went to great strides to help their guests arrange their travel and accommodations.

“Everyone was coming from the same place, so we got a group rate for the exact same vacation package,” says the couple. “There were only a couple guests coming from elsewhere, but they flew to our hometown first and we booked them on the same package.” Working with a travel agency also helped with booking the group travel, but be sure to double-check all the details, warn the couple.

When it came to choosing their venue, the couple again had a plan. “With an all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about your guests finding things to do or a place to eat,” says the couple. “We chose a…resort which was supposed to have great food. It also didn’t hurt that it was close to the airport…”

For advice and help with planning, the bride sought-out other brides who had held their wedding at the same resort – Iberostar Grand Rose Hall. “No matter how obsessive you think you are, there are always people who are more obsessive than you – and that’s a good thing,” says the bride. “It takes a bit of work to read through everything you find, but sometimes you find some very useful information that comes in handy.”

Gloria and Basil ultimately got everything they wanted for their destination wedding and have some words of encouragement for other couples wishing to achieve the same: “Things will not go exactly how you planned and there will be hiccups. Accept this beforehand and take it in stride. The most important thing is the two of you being together. Plus, if anything goes wrong, you’ll get a story out of it and probably some memorable pictures…”
