When it came to deciding where to get married, Alexandra and Theodore were in a unique position. The couple knew they wanted to get married in a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple…and it just so happened that the nearest one was six hours away! Never doubting their decision, the couple traveled from their hometown to Hamilton, New Zealand. Their family and friends were expecting the couple’s decision and happily traveled along for love and support.

When it came to picking a venue, things weren’t so cut and dry. “The location was pretty much picked for us, but we still had to find the perfect place to hold our reception,” says Alexandra. “This took us a while to decide, we went to so many venues before we picked Woodlands. Once we had picked our venue, everything pretty much fell into place.”

The couple credits their venue’s on-site wedding planner with being a huge help. “The wedding planner at the venue was amazing and did most of the work for us when we were not able to be there,” says the bride. “We told her what our vision was and she helped to make it happen. It was also helpful that she knew the area really well and could tell us where to get good deals.”

The bride says that friends and family were also key in the couple executing their wedding vision. “[Planning] did become a bit stressful getting closer to the wedding day as I had so many things to finalize and it was hard to keep track of everything. I was very fortunate to have great bridesmaids who were able to help me sort everything out.”

The couple admits that having a destination wedding vs. a hometown wedding did come with added stress. “We had to be very organized as we only went to the venue a couple of times before our wedding day,” recalls Alexandra. “Overall it was challenging, but worth it in the end.”

The bride has a few bits of advice for other couples planning a destination wedding. “Make sure if you are having a destination wedding that you give yourself lots of time to prepare and organize everything. Also, let your guests know quite early on so they can have time to make travel arrangements. Even though wedding planning can get stressful, try to make it fun and enjoyable.”
