A Pretty Puerto Rico Wedding AwayWords by Courtney Cox

Lindsay and Jason had no difficulty in deciding where to host their destination wedding. “I’ve always dreamed of getting married by the ocean,” says the bride. “My husband is half Puerto Rican, so we decided this would be a meaningful place to tie the knot for both of us. It was also ideal because the majority of our guests were coming from either Texas or New York. Both places have non-stop flights to San Juan under four hours and you don’t need a passport.” The couple was smart to factor convenience for their guests into the choosing of the destination and the appreciation showed in the number of RSVP’s.
“We had friends and family coming from across the U.S. and decided that since the majority of the group was going to have to travel, why not choose a great vacation spot?” says Lindsay. “[Everyone responded] very enthusiastically! I was actually surprised how many people made a vacation out of the trip and booked an extended stay at the wedding venue location.” Once the couple decided on a destination and discovered their guests were on board, they visited San Juan to find the perfect venue to host their wedding away.
“When we went to check out resorts, we fell in love with La Concha Resort,” says the bride. “We were able to have a beautiful ceremony outdoors on a terrace overlooking the beach, then head to a ballroom inside for the reception and to dance the night away! It was perfect for us!” Not only was the resort the ideal fit for the couple’s event, but they were able to negotiate a great room rate for their guests. When asked about the planning process, Lindsay looks back on the experience fondly.
“It was awesome, so much fun and very low stress. A wedding planner was a must to help give me specific advice on vendors in the area and to help communicate with them.” In terms of inspiration, the couple took a popular route to explain their vision to their vendors. “Pinterest was particularly helpful because I could create and send my boards to vendors to easily explain my vision of the wedding day without having to be in person with them.”
When it came time for guests to plan for the couple’s wedding, Lindsay and Jason found themselves answering a lot of questions. To streamline the process, the couple created a detailed wedding website for their guests. “People had a lot of questions about the room block, airport, passports, currency and what to do in Puerto Rico,” explains the couple. “We made a website, which had a ‘travel’ page with detailed answers to all of those questions. This was so helpful!”
Come W-Day, the couple’s wedding vision came to life with the help of their venue, vendors and wedding planner. Looking back, the couple has no regrets and knows they made the right decision to get married away. Without a destination wedding, they don’t think their guests would have had nearly the same experience and amount of fun. “Everyone there was on vacation, which was so unique, special and a really good time!”
When asked about advice for other couples, Lindsay had some very specific ideas. “Plan in advance! We had a little over a year to plan our wedding and this was the perfect amount of time. We were able to really enjoy the planning process. Also, with a destination wedding, it’s hard to do too many DIY projects, but it’s important to implement as many personal touches as you can to make the day unique and all yours. For example, I wore my mother’s veil as my ‘something old.’ All the little touches made the wedding so special, unique and so ‘us!’”
