Honeymoon Jubilee in LondonWords by Melissa Klurman
London is calling for a romantic honeymoon just in time for a once-in-a-lifetime royal party.
Having royal thoughts for your honeymoon? June is the perfect time to hop across the pond to visit London for Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee, a celebration of her unprecedented 70 years on the throne. London is getting ready to celebrate in a big way. From June 2 to June 5, that means parades with full pomp and regalia, fireworks, parties, and pageantry. It’s the kind of enchanted once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a royal party as grand as the monarchy.
Can’t make it for the Jubilee weekend? Don’t worry, the celebrations continue throughout the summer.
How to Celebrate
The Tower of London, once the home of queens and kings, then a notorious prison and now the repository of the resplendent Crown Jewels, will fill its moat with a “flood” of flowers for a jubilee Superbloom from June through mid-September. To see royalty in a slightly different way, book tickets to Six, the rock-musical about the six wives of Henry VIII at the Vaudeville Theater.
For other royal-themed exhibitions and displays stop in at the Life Through a Royal Lens exhibit at Kensington Palace, walk the halls of the home of former monarchs George III and Queen Charlotte at Kew Palace, and visit Westminster Abbey, the site of coronation for all British monarchs since 1066.
Tip: Purchase a GoCity pass for discounted, skip-the-line admission to all of these sites.
Where to Stay
For a luxe honeymoon worthy of royalty, check in to the Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair, fit for the queen herself. In fact, the property is celebrating its 185 anniversary this year, making it the oldest hotel in London. But don’t let its age fool you, this isn’t a stodgy or dated property.
It’s jewel-box lobby is adorned with fantastical wall décor that feels like you’re walking into a story book (the hotel says it’s the most Instagrammed lobby in the world). For your special getaway, choose a luxury deluxe suite, combining classic comfort and modern design. The bathroom alone is the size of rooms elsewhere in London, with showers and bathtubs designed for two, perfect for your honeymoon.
The fireplaces, plush couches, and the private dining area will make you want to stay in, but if you can pull yourself away, a royals-worthy tea, one of the most coveted seats in London, awaits in the plush lounge just downstairs. Say yes to the accompanying champagne and toast to a very special English jubilee getaway.
