Honeymoon In EuropeWords by Carolyn Steere
Cinderella and her prince could not find a more romantic place to being their forever after than Beilstein, Germany. Located on the misty Mosel River in northwest Germany, this little fairytale hamlet transports the visitor back centuries to a more relaxed time. Follow the narrow cobblestone streets to Haus Lippman, a small, historic inn that defines quaint. Dating back to 1725, the rooms of the inn are light and airy with big beds and soft down comforters that need no invitation. Savor the tranquility you find here, but before you leave this beautiful region, be sure to visit Berg Eltz, a 700-year-old castle along the Mosel River. As you walk hand in hand through the thick pine forest leading to the castle, you expect Robin Hood to appear at any moment.
Aptly named, the Romantic Road winds its way through some of the most picturesque landscape as you head south toward Switzerland. Take your time and stop along the way to discover mediaeval towns and villages and sample local cuisine and wines.
When you are ready for some serious pampering, find your way to Beau Rivage Palace on Lake Geneva in French speaking Lausanne. Their newly renovated spa, Cinq Mondes, offers a wide menu of treatments, but our favorite was the Essence of Siam which includes a relaxing Japanese style bath, full body exfoliation and Thai style massage that leaves you feeling like Gumby. The spacious guest suites with views of the crystal blue lake and distant snowcapped Alps will tempt you to spend you entire visit indoors, but Lausanne offers exceptional cusine and a stroll along the lake is a must.
A visit to Switzerland would not be complete without exploring the majestic Alps up close. Don’t let narrow roads and switchbacks intimidate you because the effort is well worth it! Close to the Italian border, the “Valley of Anniviers” is absolutely magnificent. You will begin to think you cannot venture any higher when you enter the charming village of St. Luc. A warm greeting, cozy rooms and gourmet cuisine awaits you at the Romantik Hotel Bella Tola, a historic inn located in this quaint hamlet. After a day of hiking or skiing, you can return to the hotel for a sumptuous spa treatment or simply relax in a lounge chair gazing at the mountains in the distance.
Before heading south into Italy, be sure to spend a day or two in Zermatt, Switzerland. Nestled at the base of the world famous Matterhorn, Zermatt is a pedestrian villiage that can only be reached by cog train, which is part of its appeal. Interesting shops, sumptuous fondue, spectacular views and inviting inns make this a must see. Heidi (no kidding, that was her name) greeted us at the Chesa Valese, a charming hotel located right in the center of town. In our top floor room, French doors framed an unobstructed view of the Matterhorn that left no need to ever leave the downy comfort of the bed, a honeymooner’s dream! But, when the great outdoors beckons, it is a series of gondolas that take you to the top of the mountain where you can experience the wonder that is Switzerland. Indulge in an apple Streusel with vanilla sauce as you count your blessings and take in the unsurpassed scenery. Life doesn’t get much better than this.
Located at the foot of Mont Blanc, the town of Courmayeur is a hidden gem that is known for world class skiing, but is a honeymoon haven as well. The Romantik Hotel Villa Novacento, is a truly outstanding alpine hideaway where you can retreat to your cozy room and spend the whole day doing what honeymooners do. When the spirit moves you to enter our, you can stroll around the town or hike one of the beautiful trails. The nearby gondola ride is another must of the weather is clear. It leaves you breathless as the town disappears below you and the blue sky opens up as you ascend to what feels like the top of the world. Enjoy a glass of wine and delicious meal at the mountain top restaurant before returning to town for more R & R.
