Living the Slow Life

It is impossible to describe the Hawaiian “Garden Isle” of Kaua'i without using clichés. You could say Kaua'i is a ridiculously green paradise with the freshest ocean air, perfect weather all year around, awesome unspoiled natural beauty, breath-taking diamond-studded waterfalls and magical golden beaches. But apart from the clichés, there is something quite unique about Kaua'i. The locals say time moves at two different speeds here: slow and slower.
Arriving at The Sheraton Kauai’s restaurant, Lavas, on Poipu Beach, I am greeted by Executive Chef Leanne Kamekona. She brings out one amazing island-style tapas dish after another infused with both humor and personality, making each bite intricate and delicious.
At the bar after dinner, I meet Joel and Kristine Carrington from California. They say they are getting married and the ceremony will be by a private waterfall on the north side of the island. I ask if I can tag along and they agree.
I meet up with Joel at the waterfall the next day. The path is covered by flower petals and ends with a circle of flowers. Kristine arrives in a beautiful hand-made dress created by her sister. The ceremony is short and sweet. Joel and Kristine exchange vows, a kiss, the wedding certificate is signed
and it’s official.
The reception at the St. Regis Princeville Resort’s Hanalei Terrace overlooking Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai is beautiful. The rest of the evening flows smoothly with a two-hour cocktail gathering transitioning into a four-course dinner.
“We loved the experience at St. Regis,” Joel said. “The service was outstanding, the views were spectacular.”Related Articles & Advice
