Married in MauiWords by Courtney Kellar

Kelly and Matt have a long-standing love affair with Hawaii, so they knew there was nowhere else they would want to say “I do.” However, the couple knew a lot of their loved ones wouldn’t be able to make the trek to the middle of the Pacific, so Kelly and Matt did all they could to make their destination wedding an unforgettable experience for the guests who attended.
Because of their dedication to achieving their dream look and a perfect guest experience, the couple wasn’t willing to budge on the details of their wedding. “Planning a wedding on an island, with limited stores and vendors proved to be quite the challenge,” says Kelly. “We knew what we wanted and weren’t willing to compromise. In the end, a lot of the items we were looking for weren’t available locally and we ended up shipping tons of [items] over.”
Come W-day, the couple was joined by 75 guests at the stunning Haiku Mill on the island of Maui. The bride and groom customized as many details as possible in order to give their guests a custom experience and avoid a “cookie cutter” wedding feel. “For instance, we are both huge NFL fans,” recalls the couple. “When we introduced the wedding party, we had a professional voice-over talent pre-record our introduction as if we were our very own NFL team.”
Details for their guests ranged from pashminas in case of a chill, custom umbrellas in case of rain drops, colored flip-flops in case of sore feet and a custom-made play list. “We wanted to make sure people had an absolute blast, so the focus was on entertainment,” says the bride. “We had our guests submit their favorite songs in advance and made sure there was something for everyone to dance to.”
While the planning process wasn’t as smooth at times as the couple had hoped, it was worth it in the end and they have no regrets. “I am so glad we spent the time we did planning the little details to make this wedding ours,” says Kelly. “The small details were what stuck with the guests, from the W embroidered on the napkins at the dinner table to the custom labels on their water bottles – the little details didn’t go unnoticed.”
