As newlyweds, you might not even consider whether it’s a smart idea to wear your wedding rings on your honeymoon. However, traveling with such valuable pieces requires some thought and preparation. We’ve asked Patricia K. Low, President and CEO of Jewelers unBLOCKed, to weigh-in on what to consider and what steps to take to ensure your wedding rings stay safe.
The first test towards forever is on your honeymoon. To wear the ring or not to wear the ring? That is the question.
But, really, the answer is simple…wear the ring! You just got married – show off that bling!
But oh – the perils of reality set in…there are precautions that must be considered. Insurance expert, Patricia K. Low, President and CEO of Jewelers unBLOCKed™ has some tips for you.
Packing List:
Document of Ownership
Bring documentation certifying it really is your ring. This prevents a misunderstanding with customs or any other official you may run into. Proper documentation could be a photo of the sales receipt, authenticity certification, appraisal details or insurance details.
List of Valuables
Only bring those pieces you feel you must bring and list them in a document. If there is a certain special necklace you had envisioned wearing over a romantic dinner – we get it. But, it is important to keep these things organized. If you have the time, taking pictures of each piece is recommended, as well.
Storage
Make sure you have a place to store your ring should you take it off. This could be the original velvet box or a soft bag. Whenever your ring is not on your finger, it should be stored here.
Jewelry Cleaner
Whether your honeymoon is spent lounging on the black sands of Santorini or exploring the cobbled streets of Paris, your ring will get dirty. Soak your ring in cleaner to keep it sparkling and safe from nicks or tarnish.
Mental Notes:
Check Your Insurance
Your ring and other valuable jewelry probably won’t be adequately covered under your homeowners or renters policy. Be sure to talk to an insurance professional to make sure you have the right coverage for your valuables. Double check your coverage before you head to your honeymoon to make sure you understand what is – and isn’t – covered.
Use the Safe
When you are not wearing your engagement ring, leave it in the hotel’s secured vault (in its box/bag). Only leave semi-valuables in the in-room safe – any hotel staff that has access to your room could potentially have access to the safe.
Keep it On
Never take your jewelry off when going through security. It gives any stranger way too much time to swoop it up as you are getting patted down.
Hide the Bling
When you are out and about, turn your ring inside your palm, so the diamond/gemstone is not visible. Out of sight, out of mind.
Stand Up Straight
You are probably on cloud 9, considering you are on your honeymoon, so be sure that confident spirit is shown. Thieves target those who appear oblivious, distracted and timid.
With these tips under your belt, your ring is set to last forever! And just maybe, the honeymoon phase will too!
