While you’re planning your special day, don’t forget to make sure your skin is ready too! Check out this skin care advice to make sure your skin is glowing for your big day.
Consult a Professional
It’s time to meet with a specialist to discuss your unique skin goals. Creating cellular change in the skin takes time, so the sooner you can put together a game plan, the better! For example, acne takes about 90 days to form, so it can take about 90 days to clear the skin. Keep this in mind when you set the wedding date!
Schedule Regular Facial Treatments
Facials are like workouts for the skin. While one is great, having facial treatments at regular intervals will create a compounding effect.
Facial treatments can also vary depending on your skin concerns, or how close your wedding is. Facials scheduled 1-4 months from the wedding day could be more aggressive to make change to the skin, whereas a facial that is less than 2 weeks away should focus on hydrating and nourishing the skin. Facials should not be performed closer to a week before the wedding, to avoid any potential irritation or allergic reaction.
Facials are also a great time to check in and make sure your skin is on track for your big day!
Start a Customized Skin Care Regimen
This skin care regimen is for you to do at home, which will tackle your unique skin concerns. Everyone’s skin is different, so everyone’s skin care routine can be different too.
It is important to begin a regimen 3-4 months in advance to allow change to happen, but also to allow your skin to acclimate to any active ingredients your skin care professional suggests for you.
For the most effective and beneficial Skin Care Regimen, remember to be consistent. Being consistent with your skin care regimen at home ensures you get the most benefit from your products.
Also, make sure you wash your face and apply moisturizer immediately after working out or sweating. This means keeping a travel kit of skincare in your gym bag along with fragrance free baby wipes as an emergency backup, if you are prone to acne breakouts.
If you’re sticking to your skin care regimen, don’t touch your face. Stop the picking, popping, touching, playing with or investigating with your hands. When you feel a pesky pimple pop up, use ice to calm the inflammation and hinder the growth of bacteria. Roll an ice cube around on the spot for 1-2 mins after cleansing and follow with your toner and skin care routine.
Wear Sunscreen
Make sure you wear your SPF daily to prevent any new sun damage from appearing on the skin. Even if you aren’t planning to head outside, or there is a whiteout blizzard, make sure you are in the habit of wearing your sunscreen daily as it is the cumulative daily effect rather than a day at the beach that leads to most sun damage on the skin.
Use Eye Cream
Unless you don’t mind the delicate skin around your eyes to prematurely drooping and wrinkling, I suggest an eye cream for everyone over the age of 20. Prevention is key with your skin, and your eyes are the first part of the face to show signs of aging. Use your ring finger when applying your eye cream since it is your weakest finger. Repeated or excessive pulling/tugging on the eye area will eventually lead to premature wrinkles…so be gentle!
Drink Water
Staying hydrated, especially on the days leading up to your wedding, is essential to beautiful skin. Healthy, hydrated skin cells have a glow even the best makeup application cannot replicate. On the same note, do your best to avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine, these types of drinks can dehydrate your skin quickly.
Feed Your Skin
Foods such as salmon or some leafy greens help to support healthy skin! Anti-oxidants fight the damaging free radicals that try to break down our skin, and omega 3 fish oils help calm inflammation and hydrate the skin from the inside out are crucial to achieving a gorgeous glow. For a radiant complexion, blueberries, wild salmon, spinach, green tea, almonds, sweet potatoes and avocados are all options to provide your skin with what it needs.
De-Stress
When we are stressed, our bodies turn on our protective mechanisms automatically (think “fight or flight”). For our skin, it’s best defense is creating a protective layer called our acid mantle (comprised of our natural oil and sweat which is acidic by nature, protecting against germs and bacteria). When we are stressed, our oil glands jump into hyperdrive…not a huge deal unless you are acne prone. The overabundance of excessive oil can aggravate pores predisposed to acne, which rapidly leads to a breakout. Find ways to reduce your stress levels such as yoga, going for walks, meditation or meeting up with girlfriends.
Love Your Skin
The best advice there is…love your skin. That’s right…LOVE every pore, every pimple, every freckle, every wrinkle. As women, we are so hard on ourselves. One thing I have learned treating skin for 17 years now…NO ONE has perfect skin…and everyone’s skin ebbs and flows.
You are beautiful no matter what flaws you might think you have. And on your wedding day, you will be the most beautiful bride!
