Summer Mountain HoneymoonsWords by Kimber Westphall
Honeymooning is perhaps the most anticipated experience associated with a wedding, second to the walk down the aisle. It’s the sweet release of responsibility, wedding planning and the real world for an extended amount of time. Oh, and did we mention you’re experiencing a dream trip with the love of your life?
Although the beach is often a go-to for honeymooners, we’ve rounded up a list of luxurious mountain town getaways and activities to enjoy during the spring and summer, which are truly honeymoon-worthy. Leave the skis at home, but pack your hiking boots and sense of adventure.
Waldorf Astoria - Park City
Park City, Utah
Sitting in the lap of luxury at the base of the largest ski resort in the country (Park City Mountain Resort), you and your honey will experience luxury and decadence, complete with ample puffs of fresh mountain air. There are only 160 rooms and suites, so you won’t feel like there’s a flood of traffic everywhere you go, especially during the non-ski season. That’s another perk of jetting away to these mountain towns in the summer and spring. It won’t be as crazy with folks wanting to hit the slopes. And, for the ultimate relaxing escape, you can retreat to the Waldorf Astoria Park City's 16,000 sq. ft. spa offering a holistic approach to balancing the mind, body and spirit through customized and seasonal treatments. Be sure to check out their tea bar for all sorts of yummy sips while you’re lounging in the spa. And for the dudes, snag the hotel’s very own signature beer. They partnered with Park City Brewery and created Pow Day, which is offered in their restaurant Powder year-round and in the hotel’s beer garden during the summer.
For warmer weather activities in the summer, you may visit Utah Olympic Park. There are ropes courses to cultivate some friendly honeymoon competition and bobsled runs sans the snow. Plus, the massive Nordic ski jumps are used for zip lines and tubing. Additionally, Waldorf Astoria Park City is located directly adjacent to the Canyons Golf Course, one of the newest courses in the area. Other activities include fly-fishing on the famous Provo River, hot air ballooning and SUPing on local lakes/reservoirs or in Homestead Crater.
The Ritz-Carlton - Lake Tahoe
If we absorbed anything from this season’s The Bachelor, we gathered a firsthand glimpse of Lake Tahoe and its breathtaking views. You almost can’t decide if the mountains or the water are more incredible. In a perpetual rivalry of beauty, the two elements converge and create the perfect honeymoon escape for tranquility and relaxation. You can literally greet the morning sun on a mountain hike with your love and then watch the sunset mid-canoe that evening.
A lush retreat to find respite in after outdoor activities is The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. The resort spa is a must-do with a variety of treatments from head to tippy-toe. One of their signature treatments, Chai Spice Warmer, wraps you and your new spouse up in warm scents of chai spice and vanilla. A romantic spa splurge should be on every honeymooner’s to-do list. In addition to the hotel’s lavish amenities, they’ve added a new one to the list. Lake Club, The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe adds an extraordinary new dimension to the experience, providing newlywed guests with a unique, stunningly designed waterside venue and an accompanying host of conveniences that include al fresco dining, leisure and water activities, and direct access to the lake. After all, it’s all about access and location.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Situated in the heart of downtown Jackson Hole, Wyoming with breathtaking views of Snow King and Jackson Valley Mountains, Hotel Jackson redefines the art of Western hospitality with exquisite accommodations in a pristine setting for an extraordinary luxury hotel experience. Just a couple years old, Hotel Jackson offers only 58 guest rooms including six suites. So, this will certainly be cozy and relaxing for your honeymoon. There isn’t a bunch of hustle and bustle. Located just around the corner from the site of the original namesake hotel built in the 1900s, Hotel Jackson combines rustic elegance with a contemporary Western design. Warm re-claimed barn wood, soft leather elements and modern Western décor pay homage to the hotel’s heritage. What honeymoon is complete without dining and decadence? Hotel Jackson‘s signature restaurant FIGS is located directly adjacent to the lobby and serves Mediterranean-inspired small plates. After dinner, you both can retreat to Sacajawea Library where they offer handcrafted cocktails, wine, beer and yummy snacks.
Some non-winter activities in Jackson Hole to add to your honeymoon bucket list include whitewater rafting, zip lining, hiking and fly fishing. Nestled in-between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, you have some of America’s most beautiful landscapes right in your backyard. Talk about some envy-evoking Instagram opportunities on your honeymoon. Paragliding is another popular pastime for this area of the country. You and your bae can take turns paragliding from a mountaintop (don’t worry – you will be in tandem with a professional) and soak up the best views in nature while gliding over peaks and valleys.
Viceroy - Snowmass
At Viceroy Snowmass, mountain adventure glows with modern spirit at the base of one of the world's most popular ski mountains: Snowmass. Nestled seven miles from downtown Aspen in the heart of Snowmass' new Base Village, you can have your mix of a quiet retreat or venture the short jaunt into Aspen to explore.
With access to the trails on Snowmass Mountain, Viceroy Snowmass boasts unique offerings including hike-in/hike-out (or bike-in/bike-out) spa treatments at the Viceroy Spa. So, you can literally get your workout in and roll right into your relaxing and romantic spa treatment together. Guests of the hotel can check out the exclusive Water, Land & Air offering, which gives the best of Snowmass in one day, including a morning paraglide over Snowmass mountains, an afternoon of mountain biking with a guide in the Snowmass Bike Park, and an evening fishing experience and gourmet meal with the chef of TORO, the hotel’s new restaurant.
Viceroy Snowmass is also offering guests a luxurious way to experience the iconic Aspen to Crested Butte hike. The two of you may enjoy a private transport to the trailhead where the guided trip begins. The hotel’s culinary team provides a gourmet trail lunch as well as treats, snacks and beverages to enjoy on the journey. Once in Crested Butte, you can enjoy the idyllic town and then have three options to complete the experience: spend the night in Crested Butte; have a helicopter bring you back to Viceroy Snowmass following the hike (Can we say dream date?) or drive back to the hotel via private transport.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
For an international honeymoon escape, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is situated in Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 700-acre, year-round luxury mountain resort wraps around the shores of pristine Lac Beauvert and boasts incredible access to wildlife and adventures in the Canadian Rockies. Known for its cedar chalets and lakeside cabins, the resort makes you feel as if you are experiencing a true rustic adventure, but enveloped in richness and comfort. The resort is also known for its elevated culinary experiences, stargazing program and a renowned spa.
This honeymoon spot has coined the nickname “summer camp for adults.” Some must-do activities for spring and summer include golfing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Even better? All aforementioned activities happen on the property, so there is no need to ever leave this romantic retreat.
