Summer is peak wedding season for many markets, especially those in well-known destinations. But with increased popularity comes higher wedding costs and more competition, so itโ€™s worth looking past the top wedding destinations to explore less common places that offer just as much (if not more) for your celebration.

We asked destination wedding experts to share their favorite underrated destinations, so grab your planning binder and keep reading to learn about these seven hidden gems.

Rhode Island

Craving salt in the air for your big day?ย If youโ€™re after coastal vibes, wedding photographer Colton Simmons says you canโ€™t go wrong with Newport, Rhode Island.

โ€œNothing beats New England summers,โ€ he assures. โ€œWith a temperate climate and a soft ocean breeze, itโ€™s the perfect weather to get married. Steeped in history and right by the ocean, nothing says quintessential New England weddings like a Newport wedding.โ€

For those seeking an even quieter small-town vibe, Simmons suggests Block Island.

โ€œBlock Island, a small island off the coast of Rhode Island, is home to incredible history and the most beautiful cliffs,โ€ he notes. โ€œWhile feeling so secluded from the world, it is a 20-35-minute ferry ride from New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, making it easily accessible. The island is home to a bustling downtown, filled with unique eateries and cozy bed and breakfasts.โ€

From beachside villas to historic hotels, Rhode Island is full of one-of-a-kind venues, so itโ€™s not hard to find your dream setting for a timeless and romantic wedding experience!

Florida Suncoast

Thereโ€™s no denying that Florida is a popular wedding destination, but summer tends to be a slower season due to the heat. While other couples flock to cooler temperatures, Jordan Heller of Suncoast Wedding and Event Leaders reveals that couples can enjoy their beach wedding at lower rates during summer months.

โ€œFrom venues to hotel stays, prices are generally lower from June through September,โ€ he explains. โ€œWe have incredible indoor venues that are looking to fill their calendar with your summer celebration. The one thing you won’t be sweating is the cost of your destination wedding!โ€

The Florida Suncoast is particularly attractive for summer destination weddings. Cities like St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa, and Sarasota offer idyllic beach settings with all the white sand and crystal blue water you and your guests want!

The Catskill Mountains

Couples who prefer a more rustic vibe for their summer wedding should consider the picturesque Catskill Mountains, according to Megan Breukelman of Megan & Kenneth. Spanning much of southern New York, โ€œthe Catskills offers a superb setting for summer weddings, with its stunning natural landscapes and cute, woodsy venues,โ€ she says.

With plenty of hiking, fishing, golfing, and sightseeing, Breukelman notes that the Catskills are โ€œideal for those who envision a summer camp vibe.โ€ Think cozy evenings around the firepit and group nature walks with loved ones.

Here, couples can blend adventure and intimacy for an unforgettable wedding experience for nature lovers, foodies, families, and anyone who appreciates soaking in the cool mountain air.

Coastal Oregon

If you canโ€™t choose between the beach and the mountains, pick a locale that offers both! With the best of both worlds, coastal Oregon is a prime destination for the indecisive.

โ€œThe Cannon Beach area is a beautiful otherworldly spot for elopements and weddings,โ€ shares Jen Sulak of Weirdo Weddings. โ€œYou have access to gorgeous formations, tides, and sunsets.โ€ Hello, jaw-dropping wedding photos!

The Oregon Coast Range runs through the region, offering stunning mountain views and wooded hikes with two state forestsโ€”Tillamook and Clatsopโ€”less than 100 miles from the coast.

โ€œPlus, the local towns are quaint and charming and host a variety of locales for any type of wedding,โ€ Sulak adds. Between sandy beaches, rugged mountains, and small-town charm, thereโ€™s truly something for everyone!

Salt Lake City

Utah may not have been on your list of potential wedding destinations, but House of Joyโ€™s Samantha Leenheer contends that Salt Lake City is well worth considering.

โ€œAn easy flight and a quick drive provide access to both unique city venues and lakeside properties ideal for any destination wedding,โ€ she says. โ€œA short drive into the mountains opens the doors to a full panorama view of mountains and full sunset views.โ€ If you want to experience a different side of nature, โ€œthe salt flats are just a bit further from the city for you and your guests,โ€ she adds.

With SLC, you can enjoy the perks of marrying in a larger city while having easy access to the wild outdoors. โ€œSalt Lake City gives you the ease of a bigger city with access to lots of activities and experiences for your guests,โ€ Leenheer assures. โ€œDon’t count it out.โ€

Costa Rica

Thereโ€™s a reason Costa Ricaโ€™s national saying is โ€œpura vida,โ€ or โ€œpure life.โ€ From lush tropical rainforests to paradise beaches, visiting this Central American country is a lesson in living life to its fullest. And whatโ€™s a better way to start a marriage?

Summer may be the rainy season, but Destination Weddings Travel Groupโ€™s Jen Avey encourages couples not to let that stand in the way of their celebration. โ€œMany couples have beautiful summer weddings in Costa Rica, whether that means a lucky rain shower on the big day or not,โ€ she assures.

When in doubt, โ€œconsult a travel specialist to ensure all your questions are answered in regard to the summer weather patterns in Costa Rica,โ€ Avey suggests.

Costa Rica is a safe and easily accessible destination known for its breathtaking landscape, tranquil beaches, and secluded hot springs. Perfect for a relaxing and romantic getaway!

Croatia

You may have never considered a wedding in Croatia, but Leo Sotelo of Story Alley Photography is ready to make you rethink this memorable destination. In particular, he recommends historic Hvar Island.

โ€œHvar has old towns with historic streets and secluded beaches with clear blue water,โ€ he says. โ€œThe island is full of beautiful scenery, like lavender fields, olive trees, and vineyards, which makes it a special place for weddings.โ€

Hvar Island is a famed summer retreat for Croatians and some European travelers. Still, itโ€™s often overlooked in favor of popular destinations with more crowds and higher costs, like Santorini or the Amalfi Coast.

Though Havr Islandโ€™s remote location is one of its advantages, Sotelo notes that it does present challenges for destination weddings. โ€œYou might need to take a flight to nearby cities and then a ferry or boat to the island,โ€ he explains. โ€œEven though Hvar has beautiful nature and old buildings, it might have fewer places to stay or services for weddings than bigger cities or resorts do.โ€

But donโ€™t worry! For every challenge, there is always a ready solution. If youโ€™re sold on tying the knot in Hvar, consult with local wedding vendors to help you navigate planning.

Planning a destination wedding is an adventure in itself, so donโ€™t be afraid to venture off the beaten path and explore these lesser-known places! In fact, overlooked destinations often exceed expectations with authentic charm and peaceful surroundings. So remain open-minded as you pick your ideal wedding locale!
