Set along the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum is a magical blend of bohemian charm, ancient Mayan ruins, and breathtaking beaches. Known for its laid-back vibe, lush jungles, and crystal-clear waters, it’s no wonder Tulum attracts couples from near and far to wed there. Ketki and Akshay were drawn to the destination for the same reasons, plus… “Tulum was the first destination we visited together, and we absolutely loved it,” Ketki says.
16Tulum offered everything the couple envisioned for their celebration—intimacy, style, and character. Not to mention, practical features like a prime location, modern amenities, and glowing reviews.
A major highlight of Ketki and Akshay’s celebration was a food menu by Hoja Santa and drinks by BeYou Cocktail Service, both inspired by the local culinary scene! “Our entire food menu for the wedding was inspired by local dishes and drinks,” they shared, adding that guests from five continents enjoyed authentic specialties like paella and local tequila.
Akshay and Ketki took a meticulous approach to managing expenses throughout the planning process. “It is a slippery slope!” Ketki jokingly warns. Luckily, they relied on fantastic wedding planners from Pride Maya Weddings to help them stay within budget and assemble the perfect vendor team. “For us, having wedding planners who spoke both our language and the local language was key,” the bride explains.
Unfortunately, just weeks before their big day, Ketki’s father fell ill, putting everything on hold. “We were torn, considering postponing the celebration to ensure his presence,” the bride shares. With the support of their families and a flexible approach, Akshay and Ketki adjusted their plans to accommodate his recovery. “It was a reminder of the importance of family and flexibility in the face of adversity,” Ketki says. Thankfully, he made a wonderful recovery, turning his presence at the wedding into a deeply cherished moment.
From organizing travel to creating a detailed wedding website, Ketki and Akshay ensured a seamless experience for their guests. “We created group messages for each group that was planning to stay together, which made coordination easier,” Akshay says. They also wanted guests to feel connected and celebrated alongside the couple. “We had a few games and fun ice-breaker events planned during the wedding, which gave our guests common topics to bond over,” the bride adds.
Ultimately, Ketki and Akshay’s wedding was not just a celebration of their love but also a blend of their rich cultural heritage with the free-spirited vibe of Tulum. The couple embraced vibrant Indian traditions, incorporating them into the relaxed, boho-chic atmosphere of their beachside venue. Both the bride and groom wore traditional outfits by Shantanu & Nikhil, perfectly complemented by decor from StyleMe, featuring lush florals and rustic elements.
“Our vows combined traditional promises with heartfelt personal touches, reflecting our journey together,” they explained. The couple’s ceremony was a beautiful reflection of their love story—one that honored their roots while embracing the laid-back spirit of Tulum.
Reflecting on their journey to the altar in Tulum, Ketki and Akshay share this piece of advice for couples dreaming of a destination wedding. Their top tip? Trust your vendors. By hiring local experts who understand the region, the couple was able to bring their vision to life while reducing the stress of planning from afar!
