You love the beach; they love to hike. You want to island-hop, but they don’t want to spend all day traveling. Fortunately, there’s a unique island-hopping combo in the Caribbean that is calling both of your names.

The twin island of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin is one of the Caribbean’s most accessible destinations, with nonstop service from the U.S. and Europe. Though only 37 square miles in size, it’s shared by two nationalities. Dutch St. Maarten is a popular cruise port, known for its lively hotels, casinos, and great shopping in downtown Philipsburg. The French side of St. Martin is less populated and a favorite sailing port, home to charming towns like Marigot and the famed strip of restaurants along Grand Case Beach.

Between them, this island boasts 37 beaches, so there’s always something to fit your mood. Rent a car and explore the beach clubs, from boho-casual Kontiki on Orient Bay to the sexy Kalatua on the Dutch side, where fresh grilled lobster and a live DJ complement the turquoise waters of Mullet Bay. Or escape the crowds at Red Bay, an excellent snorkeling spot. The stellar dining scene extends across both countries, offering creative cuisine influenced by its position as a meeting point for the central Caribbean.

When you’re ready to leave the sand behind, head to the airport for a 10-minute flight to Saba. This Dutch Antilles isle feels like another world: a volcanic mountain with steep sides that plunge into the sea. Even the airport offers bragging rights—it’s said to have the shortest commercial runway in the world. Make your way to Windwardside, a quaint village beloved by hikers who come to trek through untouched rainforest to the summit of Mount Scenery. At 2,877 feet, it’s the highest point in the Netherlands. Divers can head down to The Bottom for a dive trip in crystal-clear waters frequented by sharks and turtles. Non-divers will enjoy a round-the-island snorkel trip to admire Saba’s dramatic cliffs, straight out of Jurassic Park.

Beyond hiking and diving, there’s little else to do here—a few cozy restaurants and a glass-blowing workshop run by the charming owner of JoBean Glass Art. But that’s exactly the point. And if you get restless, St. Maarten is just across the waves.

Where to Stay on St. Maarten

If you want to stay in the heart of the action, check into the Sonesta in Maho Bay. This all-inclusive resort offers two distinct experiences: the large, family-friendly Maho Beach and the smaller, adjacent adults-only Ocean Point. Ocean Point features 130 suites with perks like swim-out rooms, a private infinity-edge pool, and exclusive restaurants, while still allowing access to the restaurants, bars, and casino at Maho Beach. You’ll be steps away from the bustling nightlife in Maho Village and just a short walk from famous Mullet Beach, tucked at the end of the airport runway.

For a quieter escape, the J.W. Marriott on stunning Dawn Beach is a great option. This new resort brings luxury to the Dutch side of the island with three restaurants and the island’s best spa. It also features the island’s largest infinity pool, perfect for relaxation, and is just steps from Dawn Beach.
