In the heart of the city that prides itself on “keeping it weird” sits the Hyatt’s latest lifestyle hotels boasting a unique, two-in-one concept. The collective goal of the Thompson and tommie Austin is to provide guests with a one-of-a-kind experience that offers a tribute to the rebel spirit of Austin and the heritage of the surrounding Hill Country. Catering to both traditional Thompson guests and younger guests aspiring to the Thompson experience, we recently had the privilege of experiencing this unique property firsthand. We are here to tell all couples considering a destination wedding in the capital of Texas – put this venue on your scouting list!

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by two entrances. Take the right door and you’ll find yourself standing in a friendly neighborhood coffee shop/wine bar area complete with a virtual kiosk for quick check-ins. This is the tommie Austin, designed specifically for those planning to spend less time and money in the room and more exploring the city.

The building’s left entrance leads to the more traditional lobby spiced up with sleek, modern furnishings and striking architectural finishes like the grand fireplace. This is the well-known Thompson hotel brand with an entirely Austin feel to it.

Also a part of the hotel’s ground floor is Diner Bar and The Grey Market. A concept that got its start in Savannah Georgia thanks to restaurant connoisseur, Johno Morisano and James Beard award-winning chef, Mashama Bailey’s partnership. The diner is an upscale take on the traditional southern establishment, with menus structured around the seasonality of the region. Wedding groups will also love the convenience of the diner’s sister store, The Grey Market, offering afternoon libations and Grab ‘n’ Go provisions.

Three floors up is another unique cocktail and culinary experience with a twist – it’s also where the hotel’s pool is located! Tell your guests to bring their party goblins to Chicago group Land and Sea Dept.’s restaurant, Wax Myrtle’s. No, seriously, the cocktails here will blow your mind! This comes as no surprise since the beverage service is headed up by one of the country‘s top bartenders, Ben Carrington. Accompanied by the savory Mexican and American-spirited libations is the restaurant’s Mediterranean cuisine with a West Texas twist. Wax Myrtle’s indoor setting is reminiscent of an upscale eatery in Cabo San Lucas which is only magnified by the outdoor area. Featuring desert plants, so many places to lounge in the sun, adorable umbrellas for shade, and a bar featuring a living wall. An adjacent private event space completes the floor and offers a stage, dining room, and professional bar with outdoor access.

If you’re thinking about saying “I do” in Austin, this space is an absolute must-consider! Plus, Wax Myrtle’s can work closely with Thompson Austin to ensure your event is streamlined. Whichever of the five reception and ceremony venues on-property you choose, getting married at the Thompson Austin is made easy with established vendor connections and friendly staff. And last, but certainly not least are the accommodations and amenities. Both Thompson and tommie guests have access to all public amenities on-property such as the fitness center with a golf simulator. Hop off the elevator and you will see two different hallways, one with a black carpet for the Thompson and another with red for the tommie. The Thompson’s rooms are characterized by floor-to-ceiling windows and custom decor with mid-century vibes. On the other side of the building, tommie’s more affordable accommodations are smaller in size but don’t skimp on style.
