Southern California is one of the United States’ most sought-after destinations for weddings, and it’s not hard to see why. The gorgeous weather, countless venues, beautiful beaches, and accessibility are just a few perks for couples to enjoy. With the number of resorts and stunning backdrops for destination weddings, it almost becomes overwhelming to narrow down which one could be right for your own upcoming nuptials. This is why we like to personally visit any of the places we recommend. There’s a lot at stake for your destination wedding, and ensuring that these properties are as great as they say they are is of paramount importance to us.
On a recent visit to Los Angeles County, I was lucky enough to visit Terranea Resort. Perched on 102 coastal acres in Rancho Palos Verdes, Terranea Resort is a luxury oceanside retreat that embodies the natural beauty of Southern California. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island, this Mediterranean-style resort is a favorite among locals and wedding planners alike. With a selection of world-class restaurants, an award-winning spa, and versatile indoor and outdoor venues, Terranea offers a complete wedding weekend experience for you and your guests.

Proximity Meets Privacy
Located just 30 minutes from LAX and less than an hour from downtown Los Angeles, Terranea is one of the most convenient luxury destination wedding venues in Southern California. It feels far removed from city life, yet remains easily accessible for out-of-town guests. The coastal bluffs of Rancho Palos Verdes provide natural seclusion and a picturesque backdrop for all of your wedding events.
All-In-One Wedding Weekend Experience
What makes Terranea truly ideal for destination weddings is its all-encompassing nature. Guests can stay on property in guest rooms, suites, bungalows, or villas, making it easy to transition from welcome cocktails to farewell brunch without ever leaving the resort. From spa services and golf to boutique shopping, kayaking, and coastal hiking, Terranea delivers a full vacation experience in addition to a wedding celebration.
One feature we loved was the “home away from home” feeling of the Lifestyle Collection of accommodations, including villas, casitas, and bungalows. With full kitchens, living rooms and patios, this residential option gives the flexibility for families and groups to stay together. The villas have one, two, three and four bedroom options available, the casitas offer up to three bedroom configurations and bungalows offer up to two bedrooms.

Ideal Destination Wedding Venues in Abundance
Outdoor weddings can happen nearly year-round. With ocean breezes and golden sunsets, the resort was thoughtful to make sure all their outdoor event venues take advantage of the 270-degree views while not compromising on service or comfort. Couples can confidently plan alfresco ceremonies, oceanfront welcome parties, or starlit receptions with little concern for pulling off a stellar event. The staff here is seasoned and service is their number one priority.
Terranea offers over 135,000 square feet of event space, with a wide selection of sprawling lawns, bluff-top terraces, ballrooms, and intimate courtyards. From small wedding groups to large multi-cultural events, the options here are plentiful.
Outdoor Venue Options
- Catalina Point is one of the resort’s most iconic locations, featuring a wooden pergola perched on a cliff’s edge, facing Catalina Island. Accommodating up to 220 guests, this secluded space can be set up for either a ceremony or reception (or both!).
- The Meadows is the largest outdoor venue at Terranea, spanning 22,500 square feet. With views of the ocean and manicured gardens, it can host up to 700 guests and is ideal for large celebrations and multicultural weddings.
- Ocean Lawn is a classic Southern California celebration spot, perfect for any size wedding (up to 350 guests) with sweeping coastal views and direct access to cocktail reception areas.
- Point Lawn & Terrace offers a panoramic bluff-side ceremony experience, often paired with an al fresco cocktail hour.
Indoor/Outdoor Venue Options
- Catalina Ballroom & Terrace features a combined 15,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor space, including a stunning lawn and floor-to-ceiling windows in the main ballroom. It accommodates up to 600 guests.
- Palos Verdes Grand Ballroom & Terrace is the largest indoor venue at Terranea. With 18,000 square feet of elegant event space and adjacent terraces, it accommodates up to 2,400 guests and can be divided for more intimate events. It also offers its own private drive entrance for a truly luxurious experience.
Terranea provides a dedicated wedding team to assist with every event; however, they do require the use of a wedding planner from their list of preferred creative partners. Terranea’s services include custom catering, timeline management, audiovisual coordination, room block reservations and access to a luxurious bridal suite for pre-ceremony preparations.

A Culinary Destination in Itself
With Executive Chef Andrew Vaughan leading the resort’s culinary team, wedding menus are crafted with as much care as the dining at any of Terranea’s signature restaurants. Terranea features eight diverse dining options that allow couples and guests to enjoy fresh, locally sourced cuisine without ever needing to leave the property. Each restaurant delivers a distinctive culinary experience, ranging from refined fine dining and laid-back coastal fare to artisan coffees and poolside dining.
- Mar ’sel is the resort’s signature restaurant. With ocean views and a rotating seasonal menu, it is ideal for rehearsal dinners and celebratory brunches. Dishes incorporate locally grown herbs from the resort’s own garden.
- Catalina Kitchen offers Mediterranean-inspired California cuisine in a lively yet upscale setting. Its expansive weekend brunch and themed dining nights are perfect for welcoming guests before the wedding.
- Bashi brings Asian fusion to the forefront with bold wok-fired flavors and creative small plates inspired by Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian traditions.
- Nelson’s, perched atop a bluff, is one of the best sunset spots on the property. This casual eatery is popular for post-wedding wind-downs, welcome gatherings, or simply sipping cocktails with sweeping ocean views.
- Sea Beans Café is a coffee shop and market offering pastries, sandwiches, gelato, and picnic-ready treats. This is perfect to just grab a quick snack or coffee to go.
- The Lobby Bar & Terrace is where live music, handcrafted cocktails, and ocean breezes set the tone for a sophisticated yet social environment.
- Solviva serves wellness-focused cuisine using nutrient-rich ingredients. Located adjacent to the spa, it caters well to bridal parties enjoying a day of pampering.
- The Grill at the Pool serves fresh salads, flatbreads, and tropical cocktails poolside for guests soaking up the sun between wedding events.
All offer outdoor seating, and several provide private dining options for small events and group buyouts.

A Resort with Spa and Wellness as a Focus
The Spa at Terranea is a serene oceanside haven designed for rejuvenation and seclusion. Spread across 50,000 square feet, it features 25 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, eucalyptus steam rooms, cold plunges, and a private outdoor pool for spa guests. Popular among brides, grooms, and wedding parties, the spa offers customizable treatments, couples’ massages, and beauty services. The Spa at Terranea is a can’t-miss and the ideal way to unwind before and after W-day.

In addition to the spa, guests can enjoy a state-of-the-art fitness center, coastal hiking trails, outdoor yoga, and wellness programming that supports both pre-wedding preparation and post-event recovery. The spa’s adjacent Solviva restaurant complements the wellness experience with nourishing, clean cuisine.
Activities to Entertain Your Wedding Guests All Weekend Long
No matter who is in your group, there is something for every person. From golf outings and spa treatments to mermaid meet-ups and stargazing with S’mores, the days and nights are sure to be filled with fun. The resort hosts pop-up activities like the aforementioned “Meet-a-Mermaid” for the kids or creating your own resin board souvenir while you enjoy music and a glass of wine for the adults. Guests can also take advantage of complimentary activities like their weekly “Dive-in Movie” or “Drinks and Beats” where a DJ serenades poolside revelers while you relax in the sun.
Taking advantage of on-site ocean activities such as kayaking is a great way to see Mother Nature up close. Gazing at the harbor seals and sea lions tucked into the rocks along the coast or watching a barracuda swim beneath your kayak is a bucket list experience for sure.
A Coveted Venue on the Southern California Coast
For couples dreaming of a destination wedding that combines dramatic ocean views, luxury accommodations, exceptional cuisine, and seamless service, Terranea Resort stands out as one of the most desirable wedding venues in Southern California. Its natural beauty, thoughtful amenities, and all-in-one convenience make it a top choice for couples seeking an elevated, coastal wedding experience without leaving the West Coast.
