San Diego has long been a favorite for destination weddings, and for good reason. The city’s near-perfect weather of mild, sunny days and breezy coastal evenings, along with easy access for guests (flight options and proximity to neighboring states are a major plus), makes it a convenient pick for couples and guests alike. Add in stunning scenery, a plethora of outdoor activities, and refined hospitality, and you’ve got a place that’s equal parts celebration and mini-vacation.
Whether your guests are flying in from the Midwest or driving down the West Coast, San Diego’s airports, highways, and walkable resort neighborhoods mean less travel stress and more time to savor your destination wedding weekend.
One of the trickiest parts of hosting your destination wedding in San Diego is trying to narrow down where it will be. From small coastal towns like Del Mar and Mission Beach to the rolling hills of Rancho Santa Fe and island destinations like Shelter Island, it’s all about what you envision for your celebration away from home.
We uncovered two very different but equally interesting San Diego properties that would each make for an idyllic destination wedding weekend: Kona Kai San Diego and San Diego Mission Bay Resort. Both are part of the Noble House Hotel & Resort collection and lean into outdoor celebration spaces, on-site dining, and wellness offerings, but they offer distinctly unique vibes and architectural personalities.
Kona Kai San Diego: An Intimate Island Respite

Perched on the tip of Shelter Island in Point Loma, Kona Kai San Diego has the secluded feel of a private island escape while remaining a short drive from downtown San Diego. Its boutique marina location creates a garden-meets-waterfront aesthetic that lends itself perfectly to a destination wedding.
A Marina Resort With Endless Venue Backdrops
Kona Kai’s venue options are built around what makes the resort special: the marina. Their signature location, Marina View Lawn, provides sweeping views of the marina and Point Loma hillside and can host groups of up to 250. Other charming options are their Cabo Garden Courtyard (seats up to 350), which is in the heart of the resort, or their very own private beachfront, complete with fire pits and cabanas. They also have smaller courtyards and terraces that deliver polished, private options for ceremonies and cocktail hours.

Couples who love the idea of a marina backdrop will appreciate how easily Kona Kai transitions from a sunlit ceremony to a candlelit reception. The property boasts indoor ballrooms and event rooms as backup when weather or logistics demand it. Want to party it up after the sun goes down? Head indoors to the ballroom for dancing until dawn. Kona Kai’s team is experienced with a range of wedding styles, from minimalist elopements to vibrant cultural celebrations.
Your Home-Away-From-Home Destination

The on-property dining at Vessel Restaurant + Bar serves Pacific-inspired dishes and is casual enough to enjoy any meal of the day but elevated enough to make it feel special. The panoramic views of the marina give you a different vantage point than many other restaurants while serving up culinary delights SoCal is known for.
For casual eats under the sun, they also have Paloma Pool Bar (next to the adults-only pool) or Tiki Bar (the family-friendly option).
You can also venture off-property, as the resort is centrally located, making it an easy walking distance from many other restaurants and coffee shops.
Get Pampered in Paradise

SpaTerre (located in the main resort building) offers pre-wedding treatments, massages, and beauty services to keep the wedding party relaxed and camera-ready. With six treatment rooms, it’s an intimate experience with all the amenities. Seasonal spa specials, along with luxury touches such as a couple’s treatment room and eucalyptus steam room, will keep you lingering in the zen.
Guests who are interested in wellness will be relieved to find the fitness center has a view of the marina and offers private yoga and meditation sessions with advanced notice.
Gorgeous Guest Rooms

Kona Kai’s rooms and suites are intentionally cozy and island-like, designed to feel nothing like an ordinary hotel but rather like a seaside hideaway. This is a welcome trait for couples who want their wedding weekend to feel like a short, private retreat.
Choose from rooms or suites with inspired decor that combines warm Mediterranean finishes with coastal colors and tones. You’ll find bold tile choices in the bathrooms and select rooms with fireplaces and waterfront views.
San Diego Mission Bay Resort — Beauty By The Bay

If your wedding vision includes white-sand beaches, postcard-worthy palms, and a sprawling resort feel for guests, San Diego Mission Bay Resort is an ideal choice. Sitting on Mission Bay, the resort embodies classic Southern California style: palm-lined patios, open lawns, and beachfront stretches that are easy to customize for ceremonies and receptions. It’s also a stone’s throw from attractions like SeaWorld and Mission Beach.

Say Your Vows With a View
One of the resort’s signature outdoor ceremony spaces is Garden by the Bay, which offers a tropical feel with towering palms and bayside views. If you’re thinking of having your toes in the sand, there is a white-sand beach just off the boardwalk ideal for more intimate weddings. If you have a large group of up to 600, consider the Bayside Terrace for dinner under the stars. The property’s outdoor venues are complemented by expansive indoor ballrooms such as the Terrazza Ballroom, which features French doors that open out to reveal pool and bay views.

Give Your Guests a “Guestmoon”
This resort’s larger scale also means plenty of on-site activities for your loved ones who are attending. And let’s face it, this is a vacation for them as well. The resort offers everything from water sports on Mission Bay like paddleboarding or jet skiing to land activities like tennis and pickleball, riding the boardwalk on a beach cruiser, relaxing by the pool, or winding down at Spa Brezza. The result is a weekend that feels like a seaside getaway, not just a single night’s celebration.
The goal at San Diego Mission Bay Resort is to support longer weekend weddings. With waterfront dining that can be woven into your rehearsal dinner, welcome party, or day-after brunch, you really don’t need to venture off-property at all. With four different restaurants on-site, as well as in-room dining, guests will find it both convenient and delicious. Our favorite was their main restaurant, Covewood—we even came back more than once.
Be Kind and Unwind
Adjacent to the fitness center is Spa Brezza, a full-service luxury spa ready to unwind your wedding stress. With an assortment of treatment offerings, the staff is friendly and the space is relaxing. Also, don’t miss their spa boutique with high-end skincare products and great gifts for your guests.

A Room With a View
One of the best parts of San Diego Mission Bay Resort is the scenery. All rooms have either a bay or garden view and come beautifully appointed with soothing colors, rich fabrics, and comfortable furnishings. The room we stayed in fit a family of four comfortably and had a large lanai that overlooked the bay. Each night we were treated to a full fireworks display, as SeaWorld is directly across the water.
Which Resort Is Right for Your Wedding?
If you are imagining an intimate wedding weekend at a boutique resort where guests wander between shaded courtyards and a marina promenade in a walkable community setting, Kona Kai’s island-like charm and cozy architecture will feel deeply personal. If your dream includes a broad beachfront lawn or toes in the sand overlooking the bay with a larger resort to keep guests entertained for multiple days, San Diego Mission Bay Resort provides the scale and variety you’ll need.
Both properties offer thoughtful culinary teams, spa services for pre- and post-wedding pampering, and on-site accommodations that will keep your group cohesive—which is the most important ingredient for a smooth, celebratory destination wedding in San Diego.
No matter which you choose, San Diego’s year-round mild climate, easy travel access, and wealth of outdoor activities make it one of the most practical and romantic destinations for couples. From marina sunsets at Kona Kai San Diego to powdery-sand vows at San Diego Mission Bay Resort, you can plan a wedding weekend that feels like both an event and an irresistible seaside escape.
P.S. If you can’t decide between the two, marry at one, honeymoon at the other! Problem solved.
