Boho Wedding Inspo in Costa Rica

Situated on a lush, 2.5-acre tropical reserve in Costa Rica sits a dreamy rainforest respite by the name of Villa La Isla. Recently, a team of talented vendors led by wedding planner and designer, Aimee Monihan of Tropical Occasions, utilized the stunning venue space to create an intimate reception setup.

Using dried floral elements and a monochromatic color palette, the team created a timeless piece of upscale, boho inspiration – perfect inspiration for any reception by the sea! We spoke with Aimee to get the inside scoop behind all the dreamy details. (See below.)

What inspired you to create this styled shoot?

This was a look I’d wanted to do for some time, and this project allowed me the artistic freedom to do as I pleased. I chose cream as the primary color and planned to add light gold accents. Our goal was to create an intimate event with a dramatic and bold look. I loved how it turned out, and we have had so many clients ask for similar decor.

How did the ceremony look come together?

We used Villa La Isla‘s upper terrace for this ceremony spot. We went with a more on-trend circular altar made out of all dried elements of locally sourced palm fronds and pampas grass. I wanted the aisle way, to mimic the vibes of the reception table. So, we employed non-symmetrical pieces that felt like they were naturally sprouting out of the ground, except on a much larger scale than the delicate pieces we replicated at the base of the reception table.

Tell us about the aspects of the reception design?

I had so much fun with the reception design, starting with an escort station that had luxe gold shelves full of candles featuring guests’ names and table numbers. For the table, I wanted to show couples that you can create an impactful design without being wasteful. I had seen Pampas used a lot in suspending structures. These are typically cloud-like and ‘float’ over a table. I love this look, but anytime we have to hang an element from the ceiling, the cost goes up. Instead, we decided to show the same concept using gold halo stands for a similar effect.

One important takeaway: There is no reason why any free-standing floral used in ceremonies should not be repurposed in a reception. Ceremonies typically last 30-45 minutes. Therefore, there is no reason to not reuse the flowers from your ceremony in your reception (if the arrangement is truly free-standing and easy to move). It’s also a great way to tie both looks together!”
