We’ve consulted two expert planners, Deborah Kugler of Officalé and Barbara of BWEDDINGS & Events, both highly experienced in tackling the unique curve balls this idyllic Italian setting can throw. Their insight and tips are sure to help you feel better prepared as you enter the beginning stages of planning your dream Lake Como destination wedding.

Most Common Misconception About Lake Como

One of the most common misconceptions couples have when first considering Lake Como is assuming it functions like a single, centralized wedding location. In reality, the lake is a collection of small towns tucked into steep hillsides.

Barbara Vanni echoes this sentiment, noting that what looks close on a map often isn’t close operationally. “Lake Como is not a single, centralized destination. It’s a collection of small towns spread along steep hillsides and narrow roads, some of which are only accessible by boat or limited vehicles,” she says. That geography alone can affect transportation costs, staffing hours, and overall coordination far more than couples expect.

As Deborah Kugler explains, “Every movement of people, florals, musicians, photographers, hair teams, catering support, rentals—everything—requires boat transfers, water taxis, or long mountainous routes.”

Bottom line: building in realistic buffers, limiting unnecessary transitions, and clustering events thoughtfully can make a significant difference.

Budgeting for the Invisible (But Essential) Costs

Lake Como weddings are often described as effortless and elegant, but that seamless feeling is the result of meticulous planning behind the scenes. Logistics here are not optional add-ons; they are foundational.

“For Lake Como, we advise couples to reserve 18 to 25 percent of their total budget specifically for logistics and contingencies,” Deborah shares. “Logistics aren’t an afterthought here; they’re the architecture of the experience. When planned properly, they’re invisible. When under-budgeted, they’re the source of most stress.”

Knowing Where Lake Como Is (and Isn’t) Worth the Splurge

A common fear among couples is that everything in Lake Como comes with a premium price tag. According to both planners, that simply isn’t true.

“Not everything is inflated, only the categories tied to access and international demand,” Deborah explains. She points to local florals, artisan stationery, regional wines, and classical musicians as areas where couples can find exceptional value without compromising quality.

Barbara agrees, emphasizing that intentional planning is key. “It’s about understanding where the destination commands a premium and where authentic, local quality delivers exceptional results,” she says.

The Expense Couples Rarely See Coming

Even after careful planning, there is one line item that tends to surprise couples once the wedding weekend wraps: extended vendor hours.

Deborah notes that boat schedules, access restrictions, and earlier breakdown requirements can quietly shift everyone’s timeline, leading to overtime or additional staffing costs.

Barbara adds that this isn’t a sign of poor planning, though; it’s simply the nature of a destination built around movement. “Because destinations like Lake Como operate on timing and access, even a perfectly planned weekend often requires additional hours behind the scenes to keep everything seamless,” she says.

It’s important to discuss potential extensions upfront and build flexibility into contracts where possible.

What’s Actually Worth Every Penny

If there is one area where both planners agree couples should not try to cut corners, it’s working with experienced, venue-approved vendors.

“Many Lake Como venues require couples to work exclusively with a short list of approved vendors,” Barbara explains. “While this can feel limiting or costly at first, it’s actually a major advantage.” These teams understand access points, sound regulations, power limits, and timing constraints; knowledge that is invaluable in such a complex setting.

Deborah points to one splurge that consistently elevates the entire experience: a private boat moment for guests. “It’s not just transportation, it’s emotional architecture,” she says.

At the end of the day, little snafus in the planning process are kind of inevitable, regardless of the location you choose to say “I do” in. And, even though Lake Como can present some additional challenges, as long as you understand and prepare for them (and hire a planner well-versed in the location), your wedding can end up just as cinematic as that famous lakeside wedding scene; no Jedi secrets required.
