How to Pull off an At-Home Proposal

Just because you’re social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t still have the proposal of your dreams!  This moment will be one that you remember for the rest of your lives and can be especially romantic when done in the privacy of your own home.  An intimate living room proposal can hold all of the magic as a grand-gesture proposal, but in a setting that is relaxed and comfortable.  There’s no worry about expressing emotions publicly or creating a scene; instead, the moment is focused on you and your partner.  Here are some of our top tips for making your at-home proposal the moment of a lifetime.

Set a Date

Tell your partner to block off a day or evening in their calendar for a special date.  Since you’re used to staying home, this will already make the date feel more special than your typical Netflix and quarantine night.

Dress Up

Encourage your partner to treat this as he/she would treat any date night out.  Get glammed up, wear a nice outfit, and be ready for a night in!  If you want to make the getting ready process even better, plan a mini at-home spa day, using DIY recipes for bath bombs or soothing facial masks. Setting up at-home manicure and massage stations is also a great move!

Be Creative

Think about what you and your partner love doing together and plan a proposal that fits your personalities:

  • If you both enjoy food, plan a romantic dinner at home.  Start with your favorite specialty cocktails and order multiple courses for dinner.  You can either pick your favorite restaurant, or a few different restaurants and order one course per place!
  • If you’re more creative, consider learning a musical duet together as a way to bond and share your skills.  Plus, you can perform it at the wedding if you feel so inclined!
  • For those who like going out on the town, play your favorite tunes and have a dressed-up dance party in the living room.
  • If you’re typically the outdoorsy couple, set up a tent filled with pillows and blankets in your backyard to spend a night outside and under the stars.  If you don’t have a backyard, move the furniture to the corners of your room, and set up a fort or tent inside!
  • For those with a serious case of wanderlust, re-create your favorite vacation from the comfort of your own home.  Consider putting out photos from the trip and trying to match the setting in terms of music and food.

Document the Moment

Before the big surprise, set up a video camera that can catch the proposal.  This is a great way to make sure you have video footage and photos (snap stills from the video) to share with family and friends while staying in the moment.

Share the News

Since telling family and friends in person isn’t an option currently, host a virtual brunch to share the news!  You can pick if you want to tell both families at the same time or separately, but hosting a virtual brunch makes it a fun event for everyone, and a great way to connect with loved ones and share your excitement.
