You’re about to hop on a plane and travel across the globe to celebrate a marriage. Destination weddings are as enjoyable as they are memorable. They’re also easy to plan for, as the happy couple takes care of all the details. That said, it’s often hard to know what to pack, especially when you’re off to a location you’ve never been to before. Here are four tips to help you figure out what to bring along on your trip:

1. Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen

You don’t want to rock a sunburn on the big day. If the wedding is at the beach, make sure to pack sunscreen and aloe in addition to your other toiletries. Bring along a towel, swimsuit and hat as well. Pack a few travel-sized necessities in your carry-on so you can get to them right away. On most flights, you can’t bring any liquids over larger than 3.4 ounces.

When you land, apply your sunscreen as soon as possible. After all, you never know when you’ll have the chance to take a dip in the water. Often, the bride and groom organize a few activities for everyone to take part in during the trip. Double-check that you’ve packed the appropriate gear for whatever those may be.

2. Bring a Backup Outfit

You’ve likely chosen an outfit to wear for the ceremony and reception. Make sure to bring a backup as well, just in case things don’t go as planned. If your luggage is lost or you spill food on your top, that backup outfit will come in handy.

In this case, you may be worried about airline baggage limits. To ensure that you don’t end up paying more in fees, pack the outfit in an accessible carry-on bag. Doing so will keep you prepared in the event of a mishap. After all, you may not have the chance to purchase adequate attire once you arrive.

3. Pack a Couple Pairs of Shoes

Shoes are tricky – do you go for a versatile pair or pack a few that you love? This decision is a tough one, especially when you want to save space. In general, you’ll want to throw about two to three pairs of shoes in your suitcase. Not only does this provide a bit of variety, but it also helps prevent hygiene issues.

You shouldn’t wear the same pair of flats for a week straight, so opt for a couple of pairs that work for different occasions. Is the wedding in the mountains? Take both hiking boots and dress shoes. What you bring in this regard depends on location and personal preference.

4. Check the Weather

Not every destination wedding takes place somewhere tropical. Before you leave, look at the weekly forecast and pack accordingly. Are you headed to the mountains? If so, bring along a hat, scarf and pair of gloves for extra warmth. In fact, mittens offer better insulation than fingered options. On the same note, you’ll want to make room for a shawl or light jacket if it seems a bit cloudy.

When the weather looks humid and warm, toss in a few pairs of shorts or dresses. Leave the umbrellas at home, unless it’s compact – if it rains, that’s something you can buy anywhere. Also, remember to pack clothes for your return trip, especially if you live in a very different climate. Try to do this a few days in advance of your flight so that you can purchase any necessary items.
