Planning a destination wedding is a dream come true for many couples, with visions of sun-drenched beaches, breathtaking mountain views, or historic towns setting the stage for their perfect day. However, even the best-laid plans face the challenge of unpredictable weather. Rain doesn’t discriminate; whether you’re tying the knot close to home or at a faraway destination, it’s always wise to prepare for a shower (or more!).

While the thought of rain on your wedding day may dampen your spirits at first, it doesn’t need to be a cause for concern. With some creativity and preparation, a rainy day can still produce special moments and incredible memories with your loved ones.

Plus, they say it’s good luck! “Rain on your wedding day is good luck because you can’t untie a wet knot,” promises Loni Peterson of LP Creative Events.

If you’re jetting off for a wedding getaway, preparing a list of indoor activities to pull out in case of inclement weather is wise. Here are a few expert ideas to include in your plan.

Book a group activity

Your friends and family probably don’t want to hang out in the drizzle, but that doesn’t mean everyone must isolate themselves in their hotel rooms. Host a rain-proof group activity that brings everyone together despite the weather.

For example, “if the weather is keeping you from the beach/pool, consider booking a personalized tequila tasting or cooking class at one of the gourmet restaurants for you and your guests to enjoy,” suggests Jen Avey of Destination Weddings Travel Group.

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, for instance, requesting some recommendations for on-site (rain-friendly!) activities can be helpful, especially if the resort is quite large.

Other group outings include museum trips, pub crawls, yoga classes, local music or theatre performances, and culinary tours. Connect with your local vendor team to get a better idea of options and what realistically may be a fit for a group your size. You’ll want to also grab the basics- from opening and close times to the admission rate. If you have guests traveling with families, be sure to find out how kid-friendly the activities are. Most importantly, firm up transportation options if heading off site- whether you have it coordinated or you give guests their options to decide on their own.

Otherwise, asking your local vendor team that you’re working with may have some suggestions for your stay, and specifically, for your wedding day itself.

Another fun idea: Hit the movie theater! “Research to see if a specialty theater, like an IMAX or drive-in, exists in your destination,” recommends Mary Angelini of Key Moment Films. “Locating a unique movie theater that is unique to your destination will allow your guests to do something they may not have experienced otherwise.”

It may not be what you originally envisioned, but a rainy day with loved ones can still be an enjoyable and entertaining experience.

Pass the time with some pampering

Who needs an excuse to hit the spa? If you must pass a few hours while a rainstorm moves through, Angelini recommends arranging a spa day for everyone to indulge and unwind.

“The weather cannot affect your guests at the spa, and it also strengthens bonds as everyone unwinds together in a serene environment,” she explains. “Collaborate with your venue to offer customized spa packages tailored specifically for your wedding group. You may be able to arrange exclusive use of the spa facilities, creating an intimate and personalized experience for your guests.”

There’s nothing a massage or facial can’t fix! Even if the rain persists, everyone will feel more relaxed and ready to sit out the weather amongst friends.

Move the party inside

It’s easy enough to adjust your itinerary in the days leading up to your wedding, but what happens if the storm clouds threaten the big day itself? While not ideal, bad weather doesn’t need to rain on your celebrations (pun definitely intended).

Rain clouds are often fleeting and will pass in time, so a bit of creativity can keep guests occupied while you wait for the sky to clear up. For instance, “sometimes, flipping the cocktail hour before the ceremony does the trick,” Peterson explains. “Have the bar open and ready for guests if you feel there will be rain coming through.”

It’s best if your cocktail hour has covered areas, whether that’s a tented space or an indoor area within your venue. Many cocktail hours that take place in destination locales are typically set up outside to enjoy the beautiful views, but opting for a covered cocktail hour as your default can not only prevent guests from getting rained on, but it provides shade if the sun comes out.

If it seems like the stormy weather is here to stay, it’s time to implement plan B. (You know, the backup plan you’re creating right now to address this scenario.)

Your vendor team will handle moving and setting up the indoor space, so you only need to think about how you’ll keep guests entertained.

“A photo booth is a great idea for couples who want to give their guests a non-dancing option during the reception,” Megan Breukelman of Megan & Kenneth offers. “Other icebreaker games can be a lot of fun and keep guests involved in the day beyond enjoying the scenery.”

Icebreakers for your guests

Small card games and even board games can generate some friendly competition and keep guests engaged, but creating conversation starters on slips of paper or trivia that’s custom to you and your partner can be fun additions! Better yet, they can be used rain or shine.

Jen Sulak of Weirdo Weddings agrees, noting that people are always up for games. “Consider having lawn games around you so you can still enjoy the outdoors, even if you are locked inside,” she suggests. See if your venue, rental company or local business can potentially source some lawn games such as cornhole, Giant Jenga, or ring toss.

Rainy days can be an opportunity to take in your destination and create unforgettable memories that wouldn’t have been possible under clear skies. At the end of the day, the most important aspect of your wedding is the love you share. Regardless of the weather, your friends and family will be overjoyed to celebrate and spend time with you! With these rainy-day activities, you’ll feel well-prepared to make your destination wedding a memorable experience, no matter what Mother Nature brings.
