Step into a world of enchantment and wonder as we delve into the behind-the-scenes details of a truly magical reception setup. In this interview with MOD Designs, a renowned luxury design firm, we explore the inspiration behind their captivating theme and the meticulous elements that brought it to life. Inspired by the beloved tale of The Wizard of Oz, aptly titled “The Road to Oz,” this reception transports guests to the mesmerizing Emerald City.

Q: What was the inspiration for the theme/style of the reception? How did the destination of the wedding influence the decor, if applicable?

A: The Emerald City from the famed children’s classic The Wizard of OZ was a defining moment in the creation of this design. At MOD Designs we have several appointments with the client to determine the story they want to tell on their special day before proceeding with the development. In the case of this wedding aptly titled The Road to Oz we look to the intricate design of The Emerald City as a building block for our final design which compromised of over seventy-floor managers, light experts, craftsmen and construction experts to develop a space that evoked magic.

While we develop our own shades for each wedding ( this one being Dancing Teal) deep green/emerald color tones hold profound meaning to the region symbolizing royalty, wit, eloquence and foresight.

Q: What elements were included and why?

A: MOD Designs is a 360-luxury design firm and so every inch of one of our events is crafted and perfected by us from sketch and storyboarding to 3D Renders and final development. For The Road to OZ the elements we looked at as reference points from the original story were the style of the paneled walls of The Emerald City, The Yellow Brick Road & The Field of Poppies – albeit all of which were developed in the signature MOD interpretation.

Q: What was your favorite part ofThe Road to Oz” reception and why?

A: A personal favorite of mine is typically seeing how the months of preparation come together in the final product. Whenever we see the final images or videos from the event it pushes us to continually strive to capture and exude the same sort of magic for our next wedding.

Q: When it comes to designing luxurious events, whats your best advice for success?

A: Stay true to your aesthetic. At the end of the day, while MOD Designs is known for its contemporary style, we ensure the bride’s vision works in unison with ours to create a profoundly special day.

And, as a designer, the knack for maintaining an inimitable state of luxury is in the details. Always, pay attention to each and every detail.

Q: What things do you have to keep in mind when designing Emirati weddings? Anything specific to the culture or traditions?

A: Emirati Weddings are comprised of three events:

  • Milcha – the engagement – (all women)
  • Henna – pre-wedding – (all women)
  • The Wedding – women & the groom and his father, the bride’s father and brothers make an appearance for an allotted portion of time

Each one has an individual theme and location and builds like a crescendo to the wedding day. There are no limitations, apart from the fact that each regional wedding is bigger and better in terms of sheer scale and design detail so at MOD, our aim is to consistently think outside of the box. Middle Eastern clients also focus heavily on immaculate hosting; from presenting guests with a five-star experience to chocolates flown in from Switzerland – an event can be nothing short of perfection.

One design component that is not favored across the Middle East (be it in Middle Eastern Art or Architecture) are sculptures resembling humans, however with the ever-changing times who knows when this may change.
