Eloping in Patagonia is an adventure like no other, and few know it better than Andrea Enger of Andrea Enger Photography. A Chilean-born, Colorado-based adventure elopement photographer and intimate wedding expert, Andrea specializes in capturing epic love stories in Patagonia. Below are her top tips for you to know before booking your elopement in Patagonia!

Choosing the Best Time to Elope in Patagonia

Every season in Patagonia has its beauty and challenges. “Remember, their seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere,” Andrea explains. “Winter is from June to August, and summer is from November to February. Summer has mild temperatures and longer days, but it’s also the windiest time of year. I love fall because there are fewer crowds and beautiful autumn colors, but it’s also rainier. Winter is perfect for adventurous couples who love a snowy, romantic vibe, but some areas may not be accessible. Spring is booming with new life, but the winds are still chilly, with a higher chance of rain.”

Permits and Legalities

“At this time, you don’t need a permit to take photos in your wedding attire; you just need a ticket to enter the park,” Andrea says. “All of my couples get married in their countries of origin, so they do not have to go through any legalities in Chile. I always recommend going this route.”

Preparing for Patagonia’s Unpredictable Weather

Since Patagonia’s weather can shift instantly, preparation is key. “My Patagonia Portal has all of my best resources, including packing lists and planning tips, so you know to bring essentials like waterproof jackets, warm base layers, and sturdy boots,” Andrea shares. “I also schedule planning calls to help you prepare for every scenario so you can feel confident and relaxed on your big day—you’re never alone in the process. And remember, the weather is part of the adventure!”

Best Spots for Elopement Photos in Patagonia

“I have a deep love for Torres del Paine National Park, especially at sunrise near the iconic Cuernos del Paine,” Andrea says. “The Valle Francés is another gem for couples seeking a lush, dramatic setting. If you’re eyeing the vibrant turquoise waters, Lago Pehoé and Lago Paine are equally breathtaking. Outside of the park, I have the training and experience to take couples safely into wilder, less-traveled areas so they can experience Patagonia like a local.”

Sunrise or Sunset? The Best Time for Photos

“I love them both, but if I had to choose, I’d lean toward sunrise,” Andrea advises. “There’s something magical about watching the first light hit the mountains with the pink and gold hues. Mornings are usually calmer, with fewer people and less wind, making for an even more intimate experience. The sunsets are beautiful, but the weather can be more unpredictable later in the day.”

Incorporating Local Elements into Your Elopement

“Start your day the Chilean way with a yerba mate tea ceremony or toast with a Pisco Sour over dinner,” Andrea suggests. “Also, consider working with local artisans to include handmade textiles, silver jewelry, and bouquets made with native flowers. Along with Chilean cultural traditions, couples can do whatever they want in terms of traditions. That is the beauty of elopements!”

However, Andrea emphasizes the importance of responsible tourism: “I always encourage couples to follow Leave No Trace principles to protect Patagonia’s fragile ecosystems.”

Eloping in Patagonia is an adventure like no other. From selecting the right season to preparing for the elements and embracing local traditions, careful planning ensures a breathtaking experience. As Andrea says, “However you choose to celebrate, Patagonia will take your breath away in more ways than one!”
