Take one look at Sanjay and Matthew’s destination wedding photos in Guanacaste, Costa Rica and the love jumps right off the screen.

This one-of-a-kind wedding came from a unique story of falling in love. “We met in an anatomy lab during medical school,” laughs the couple, “which could sound sexy/cute in a geeky way if not for all the cadavers around us.”

The two opted for a “same-sex take on an Indian wedding.” And “instead of a traditional ceremony, defined by gender norms, we opted for a non-denominational one officiated by two of our professors and great friends,” recalls the couple.

When it came time to select the destination for their wedding, it wasn’t a tough decision. “Tamarindo was sunny, warm and a reasonably priced place to throw the best week-long party for our family and friends,” explains the newlyweds.

The two relied entirely on their event designer and wedding planner, Aimee Monihan, to make their dream of a big, “summer Gatsby-inspired” party a reality. “Our planning phone calls with her were often the highlight of our week,” the couple admits. “For two chill guys that ultimately just wanted to show up for an amazing week-long party, things couldn’t have been much smoother. She not only exceeded our expectations but became a good friend,” says the couple.

To give you an idea of just how grand of a party the ceremony was, the grooms rode in on horses in traditional Indian fashion. The reception started in the evening with customized cocktails, a delicious poke bar and an elaborate dessert bar. Guests enjoyed a four-course meal on one long dramatic table adorned with silver mirrored runners, black and gold accents and white florals, all under a waterfall of twinkling lights. After dinner, the ultimate dance party began. Everyone was having such an amazing time that when the reception was over, nobody wanted to leave. Their persuasive planner, Aimee, was able to negotiate an extra hour at the venue, so the party could continue.

For a party that never ends, the couple advises planning pre-wedding events at home so people can meet beforehand. Because guests felt comfortable enough to let loose together, it allowed for a joyful, celebratory atmosphere.
