When humpback whales breach right off your wedding venue, mid-ceremony, no less, we’d say that’s a good indication this is exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Every great love story needs a beginning, and Crystal and Luis found theirs at the office. What started as casual conversations in the workplace quickly evolved into something far more meaningful, a friendship built on mutual support, shared ambitions, and an unmistakable spark that neither could ignore. Before long, those hallway chats had blossomed into the kind of relationship people spend a lifetime searching for.

The rest, as they say, is history. Beautiful, tropical, whale-punctuated history.

A three-panel getting-ready collage: top left shows two pairs of feet in personalized fluffy slippers labeled "Carissa" and "Crystal"; top right is a close-up of a diamond halo engagement ring resting on a pink floral arrangement; bottom shows four bridesmaids in matching light blue tropical-print pajama sets sitting together on a bed, laughing and holding cocktails.

For Crystal, Hawaii had held a piece of her heart long before Luis ever visited. So when Luis finally made the trip in August 2024, experiencing the islands for the very first time, it didn’t take long for Hawaii to work its magic on him, too. And in true romantic fashion, he made the most of the moment.

Standing amid the breathtaking beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, Luis got down on one knee and popped the question. Hawaii had officially stolen his heart twice in one trip.

A three-panel details and venue collage: top left shows the groom's navy suit jacket open to reveal a fun hula dancer-print dress shirt with "1-11-2026" embroidered on the inner pocket; top right features a small mint green vase holding a vibrant arrangement of coral roses and tropical blooms; bottom is a wide shot of the ceremony setup at White Orchid Beach House — a driftwood arch, wooden cross-back chairs, and sweeping ocean views framed by tall palm trees.

“We think everyone should experience Hawaii at least once in their lifetime,” the couple says. “The islands have a way of getting into your soul, and for us, they also happen to be where our forever began.”

With Hawaii already woven into their love story, choosing it for their wedding was less a decision and more a foregone conclusion. Crystal and Luis wanted their big day to be more than just a party; they envisioned a full experience, a shared adventure with the people closest to them. A destination wedding was the perfect vehicle.

A three-panel ceremony collage: top shows Crystal walking down the aisle on a petal-strewn lawn toward the altar, escorted by a family member, with the ocean behind the wedding party; bottom left captures a bridesmaid in a navy floral gown holding a lush tropical bouquet while watching the ceremony; bottom right is a wide-angle view of the full ceremony in progress under the driftwood arch with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop.

And they didn’t just send their guests to Maui; they took them on a Norwegian cruise around the Hawaiian Islands first. Yes, really. Their guests got to fall in love with multiple islands before the main event, arriving at Maui already wide-eyed and sun-kissed. If there’s a more generous wedding gift to your guests than a multi-island Hawaiian cruise, we haven’t heard of it.

Before they even had a wedding planner, Crystal was doing what every engaged person does at 11 p.m.: searching for a venue. That’s when she stumbled upon White Orchid Beach House, a stunning oceanfront property that immediately captured her imagination. She bookmarked it and filed it away.

A three-panel ceremony moments collage: top shows Crystal beaming as Luis holds her hands at the altar, both wearing lei, with lava rocks and ocean behind them; bottom left features officiant Rev. Tino Rosete gesturing warmly during the ceremony, adorned in a brown aloha shirt and traditional lei; bottom right captures Luis gently placing a lei around Crystal's neck during the traditional Hawaiian lei exchange.

Fast forward to their first meeting with Makena Weddings, where coordinators Laurie and Cindy sat down to understand the couple’s vision. After getting to know Crystal and Luis, they pulled up their top venue recommendation. It was, of course, White Orchid Beach House. Crystal called it a sign. We’re inclined to agree.

The property is breathtaking on screen, but nothing could have prepared them for the real thing. When the couple stepped onto the grounds on their wedding day, they were speechless. And then, as if the venue itself wanted to show off, humpback whales began breaching in the ocean just beyond the ceremony. An unrepeatable, utterly magical moment that left guests and couple alike completely undone.

A three-panel first kiss and reception collage: top left shows Crystal and Luis sharing their first kiss as a married couple beneath the driftwood arch with the ocean behind them; top right is a close-up of the lush tropical bouquet bursting with protea, pink ginger, roses, birds of paradise, and monstera leaves; bottom is a wide shot of cocktail hour underway on the oceanfront lawn, with string lights strung between palm trees and guests mingling near a bamboo bar.A collage with a bride and groom, a long table decorated with tropical flowers, and a sign in a blue frame reading “Drinks are on us.”.

The dogs stole the show. Crystal and Luis couldn’t bring their five pups on the 11-hour journey, so they brought them in spirit instead. Professional pet photos by Muttography graced the welcome sign, bar sign, and cocktail napkins, and custom drink stirrers featured each dog’s headshot. Their guests were completely obsessed.

Reserved for the ones they couldn’t forget. Two seats at the ceremony bore “reserved” signs made with photos of Crystal’s late parents. Simple, beautiful, and one of the most moving touches of the day.

Sea turtle napkin rings. A small but perfectly on-brand nod to Hawaiian wildlife that tied the tropical décor together with the couple’s genuine love for the islands and their sea life.

The cigar bar was a smash hit. During the reception, guests could step away to a relaxed lounge-style cigar bar, creating organic moments of connection and giving the evening a distinctly cool, unhurried energy. It was a crowd favorite, full stop.

Their ceremony began with a conch shell. The traditional Hawaiian instrument echoed out over the ocean as the ceremony started, a powerful, goosebump-inducing sound that set the tone for everything that followed.

Crystal and Luis were intentional about honoring Hawaiian culture throughout their ceremony, not as a superficial backdrop, but as a genuine expression of respect for the place that had given them so much. The lei exchange symbolized their unending bond and the mutual respect at the core of their partnership. A traditional Hawaiian blessing acknowledged the land, the ocean, and the spirit of aloha surrounding them.

The celebration continued into the reception with performances by traditional hula dancers and fire dancers, a spectacular, joyful way to share the spirit of the islands with every guest who had traveled so far to witness this love story.

Coordinating a destination wedding is no small feat, especially when your wedding happens to land mid-cruise itinerary. But Crystal and Luis were effusive in their praise for Makena Weddings, who handled everything from scheduling around the ship’s docking times to coordinating transportation back before departure. “Makena Weddings truly did an outstanding job,” which, given what they pulled off, might be the understatement of the year.

Their advice to other destination-wedding couples? Trust your vendors. Stay organized. And when something doesn’t go exactly to plan, remember why you’re there in the first place.

“Flexibility and organization are key,” Crystal says. “Planning a wedding from afar requires trust in your vendors, and a willingness to enjoy the process. Focus on the bigger picture, and it becomes so much more rewarding.”
