Joe and Caitlyn got engaged and instantly knew a Maui destination wedding was the perfect way to tie the knot. “We wanted an intimate wedding and we love to travel, so instead of having just one day with everyone, we wanted a vacation with our closest friends and family,” Caitlyn said.

After choosing Sugar Beach as the place to host their destination wedding, it was time to tell their friends and family the news. Caitlyn said, “There were a few comments about the distance, but at the end of the day the people who love you will make it regardless of the distance.” She then added, “We just had to remind our guests it was a vacation for everyone and we promised grandbabies to the parents.”

Thanks to the help of Vickie Jackson of Love Maui Weddings, the couple was able to spend time with their guests and create everlasting memories. The couple said, “We would be lying if we said it wasn’t stressful, but that’s just the beauty of wedding planning in general,” but they admit, “We really don’t think it was any more stressful being a destination wedding.” Caitlyn says that Pinterest made choosing the location and vendors easier and really helped their vendors understand their style. “Our wedding planner was invaluable,” said Caitlyn. The couple did have some do-it-yourself projects as well. Caitlyn said a dear friend, Kelsey Laird, made stunning name cards and she customized the table signs. “She made each table a country and included a picture of us from each of the countries we visited together, which was a special touch that our guests appreciated,” Caitlyn said. Kelsey also made a flowered collar with a veil for the couple’s Pomeranian, Tinkerbelle, who was included in their flower girl wagon.

Caitlyn admits it was a little costly, however it was due to their taste. She noted, “We knew that a place like Mexico or any other state would be less expensive, but Hawaii just felt more like us. A plus was that the majority of our guests had never been to Hawaii before, so we felt honored that we could introduce them to such a magical place.”

The couple said one of the best questions their wedding planner asked them was “What is most important to you?” and they advise any couple looking to enhance their destination wedding to take that question to heart and answer honestly.
