When it was time for Jane and Thad to swap “I do’s,” the nature lovers knew they wanted an intimate ceremony in a beautiful place. With family and friends coming from all over the country to watch them get married, a destination wedding in West Virginia was the perfect solution.

The beautiful Bear Rocks Preserve in Dolly Sods was an easy selection for the couple. Not only does it boast stunning views, but it was also the place Jane took her very first backpacking trip.

While most of their guests were excited about their choice of destination, some people were a little hesitant due to the remote location. With some subtle encouragement by Jane and Thad and help finding the best places for people to stay, the guests were ready for a memorable event.

“Bear Rocks is a delicate environment, so we had no chairs, tents or equipment,” says Jane. “We asked our guests to be mindful of this.” It was important for Jane and Thad that they were sensitive and respectful of the beautiful land they were getting married on.

Decked in traditional wedding attire, aside from their hiking boots, Thad and Jane were married atop gorgeous rocks, with a background so beautiful it could only be created by Mother Nature herself.

After their mountaintop vows, the newlyweds and their guests drove an hour back to celebrate their marriage at the Canaan Valley Resort State Park. The details at their reception continued with their love of nature, with hand painted rocks serving as place markers for the guests. The mother of the bride made the napkins and placemats, adding a sentimental and personal touch.

If Thad and Jane had opted to have a hometown wedding, they wouldn’t have had all of the special memories made at their destination wedding. “Our wedding would have still been very special to us, but it wouldn’t have been in such a spectacular location,” says Jane. “We’re going to remember our ceremony and reception for the rest of our lives.”

With a gorgeous and scenic wedding on the books, Thad and Jane have advice for other couples planning their own dreamy destination wedding. “It’s a very special time. Even if everything doesn’t work out perfectly, a positive attitude makes all the difference.”
