Savannah, Georgia, was the ideal destination wedding location for newlyweds David and Claire because they got to celebrate with members of their family who were already living there. “Our friends were honestly excited to visit since they’ve heard about it from me for so many years,” the couple says.

Not only did moving the location down south cost less for the pair, but their familiarity with the city allowed them to better plan and understand how their big day would turn out. “Claire knew the city and its options so well that it didn’t take us long to narrow in on the flow of the ceremony and the reception,” the groom says.

Despite their established knowledge of Savannah, David and Claire still had their challenges when it came to planning the event. However, with the help of family, they were able to get all of their details solidified on time.

“Claire had to travel down to Savannah several times for long weekends in order to look at napkins or flowers in person,” says David. “But it ended up being so much fun, it didn’t matter. Planning a wedding is crazy no matter what! You might as well have it somewhere that you love.”

While they were primarily their own wedding planners, the newlyweds say they hired a coordinator for their big day to ensure everything went as planned. Along with organizing the event themselves, the couple and their families also made some crafty DIYs, including flower arrangements and escort cards.

Travel logistics went smoothly for David and Claire, especially because they were able to use Claire’s moms house as a hub for guests when they arrived. “Because Savannah is fairly low-key, people felt pretty comfortable and relaxed the moment they got there,” the couple says. “We also provided guests with ceremony and reception information ASAP so that they could book their accommodations.”

Although the pair ended up spending less than they would have back home, they still felt it was important to splurge on certain aspects of the wedding rather than others. “For instance, we didn’t want to spend money on a physical invitation or on a cake because Dave doesn’t really like cake,” says the bride. “But we did go all out on the dress and the suit and securing a spot for an afterparty with plenty of pizza. You just have to choose what really matters to you.”

All of the hard work put into planning paid off for the couple, especially considering the fun memories they all shared. “It was challenging at times, but the scenery, the culture, the food and the atmosphere made it all worth it,” they say. “Our friends and family were excited to learn more about a place that is and has been so special to us for so long.”

From their experience, the newlyweds learned to take in every moment and enjoy being with those they love. “Don’t sweat the small stuff because it honestly all works out. You are surrounded by your closest family and friends sending you off on a beautiful love journey.”
