If the walls of Portugal’s Forte da Cruz could talk, they’d tell thousands of love stories witnessed firsthand since their construction in the 17th century…and Rachel and Jack’s would be among them. Set in the seaside town of Estoril, this historic castle’s original intention was to protect the most affluent and prominent Portuguese while enjoying their summer vacation at the beach. Today, its doors welcome couples from all over the world seeking a unique location to celebrate tying the knot. Rachel and Jack are one of those couples, and this is the story of their journey to the altar!

“It truly was the dream venue,” Rachel explains. “How do you beat a castle on the beach?!”

A Destination to Unite Two Worlds

Portugal served as the perfect midpoint between Rachel’s family in Washington, DC, and Jack’s Scottish family, many of whom traveled from the UK. “The natural beauty, amazing seafood, and affordability made it an easy choice,” Rachel adds.

They chose Forte da Cruz not just for its breathtaking location atop Tamariz Beach, but also for the rich history it represents. Plus, the couple and their guests could enjoy easy access to the venue, conveniently located near public transportation and a direct train from Lisbon.

Incorporating Local Charm

Keeping with their desire to highlight Portuguese culture, Rachel and Jack included local touches wherever possible. Guests were treated to Lobster “cappuccinos,” beef tartare cones, and olive-crusted pork loin prepared by local vendors. The couple even took time to enjoy small acts of local hospitality—like the traditional almond pastry gifted to them by a nearby bakery on the morning of their wedding.

Rachel recalls another memorable moment during their rehearsal: “Since our venue was booked the day before, we practiced in a local park. It was spontaneous, but we were cheered on by passersby—it was such a fun and unexpected experience!”

A Wedding That Felt Like Them

For their wedding day, Rachel and Jack made sure every detail reflected their personal style. From Rachel’s Greek-goddess-inspired gown and gold crown to Jack’s outfit change into Mackay tartan trews—a nod to his Scottish roots—the couple balanced elegance with individuality. Their mutual friend officiated, and both mothers participated in readings to honor their families.

The couple’s choice of décor also showcased their love of Portugal’s vibrant culture. “We took inspiration from the blue and white azulejo tiles,” the bride says. “They were incorporated into our stationery, table settings, and even my getting-ready pajamas.”

Lessons and Advice for Couples

Rachel and Jack encourage other couples planning destination weddings to embrace local vendors to keep costs down and to fully experience the culture. They also advise focusing on the guest experience.

“As much as possible, we tried to limit splurges only to things that would directly improve the guest experience—like a late-night snack, extra food during cocktail hour, and shuttle transportation home for our guests in Lisbon at the end of the night,” Rachel says.

Looking back, Rachel and Jack wouldn’t change anything but to have more confidence in their decision to host a destination wedding. “I was worried our families and friends would be upset with us when we made the decision,” Rachel admits, “but we’ve heard nothing but compliments and even the return trips they are already planning!”

Their love story, now immortalized within the historic walls of Forte da Cruz, is yet another chapter in the castle’s enduring legacy.
