College sweethearts Cole and Mabry didn’t have a hard time choosing their desired location to tie the knot. Having grown up taking family summer vacations to the Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende, the bride held a special place in her heart for this artist’s haven. With her parents living there part-time now and the prospect of planning a more intimate celebration by design, Mabry and Cole began their journey to the altar.
“We live in a big city, and you just can’t beat the views of San Miguel and the weather!” the bride adds.
After deciding on the location, hiring a stellar planner in Valeria of Penzi Weddings & Events took priority. Then, things started to fall into place most naturally.
The couple stumbled upon Casa Cien as Penzi had orchestrated several weddings at the venue. Its proximity to the town center, ample room for the bridal party, and a picturesque outdoor ceremony space made it the ideal choice. Casa Cien’s flexibility allowed the couple to create a wedding that seamlessly blended elegance with the natural beauty of San Miguel.
The outdoor ceremony featured a stunning cross made of purple and white flowers, bringing a touch of tradition to the natural setting. Lavender bowties for Cole and his groomsmen, along with purple flowers, symbolized the couple’s shared love for their college colors.
Inspired by Mabry’s love for Halloween, the design of the reception incorporated Day of the Dead elements. Personalized tile favors, crafted by a local artisan, doubled as place cards. From traditional Mojigangas walking about to sugar skulls at each place setting, the wedding embraced its destination.
Reflecting on their decision to wed away from home, Mabry notes, “San Miguel offered views and weather that we couldn’t replicate at home.” The lush greenery and breathtaking landscapes provided an unforgettable backdrop.
Mabry and Cole’s advice for future couples planning a destination wedding is simple but essential: be over-prepared. Meticulously packing and carrying the wedding dress onto the plane are small details that can make a big difference in ensuring a stress-free celebration.
