Although West Maui is closed while the island grieves and heals, the North, South and East sides of the island are open and welcome your business. Many small businesses depend on weddings and visitors and that does not change with the current situation. Weddings support local families and businesses by creating jobs in the community. We understand that there are mixed messages and it can be confusing but please know that the majority of the small businesses and families on Maui are asking for your support and that means keeping your current wedding and travel plans. If you are unsure how your local vendors feel you can reach out to them directly or through your wedding planner. Most have been sharing their thoughts on social media. When you do visit please #comewithaloha. Remember that the island is grieving this tragedy and all the residents and tourists that were lost. Consider asking your guests to donate to one of the organizations to assist those that have been affected by the fire in lieu of gifts. Please stay away from the West side. "Lahaina is my home," Taryn says. "I grew up there, I started a business there, I've raised a family there, and I own a home there. It is, in my opinion, the most magical place on earth and what makes it so is the community. The people of Maui are full of mana (power), full of aloha (love). Although Lahaina is closed to tourism at this time, the rest of our beautiful island is open. The Lahaina community, and the community of Maui as a whole, need our island economy to move forward in the wake of this tragedy. While our West Maui O'hana comes together to support each other and rebuild, we will rely on our visitors to continue experiencing the joy of Maui on the other sides of the island. There is so much conflicting information about wha There is so much conflicting information about what the residents of Maui need and want when it comes to visitors right now. We’ve heard from wedding professionals and small business owners on the island to determine the best course of action. Here’s what we’re hearing: Maui IS open. And Maui needs you. They are working diligently as a community to adjust and adapt amidst the most unfathomable tragedy. There are parts of the island - the West side and Kula, which are not able to accept visitors right now - but the rest of the island wants and needs to get back to work. They need to support their families. Hospitality is one of their biggest industries and it’s being hit HARD. By canceling plans altogether, it will cost them much more than they’ve already lost. But here’s the thing: come with aloha. Know that this community is grieving. The entirety of the loss hasn’t even begun to really come to light yet and they need compassion, understanding and help. When you go, go with patience and kindness. Volunteer. Donate. Contribute. If your wedding was scheduled to happen on the West side of Maui, please work with your vendors to determine the best course of action. POSTPONE, don’t cancel! Lahaina needs space to recover and heal, however, there are many properties on the South side (and other areas) of the island that may be able to take your date if it is soon, so lean into your vendors to figure out next steps vs. canceling. Areas that are open and ready to welcome you: Wailea Kahului Wailuku Kihei Hana Paia Pukalani Makawao Maui is a treasured, special place…a true paradise with one of the best communities that is showing their resolve and strength in an unimaginable time.
