Having a Smaller Wedding Than Originally Intended? Here’s What to Splurge On
Most brides start planning their weddings six months to a year in advance, if not more. It gives you tons of time to plan and daydream, but it also allows more time for things to change. Sometimes life throws a few curveballs and you have to downsize your wedding, even though it’s not what you originally wanted.
Downsizing isn’t always a bad thing. Smaller, intimate ceremonies can lead the way to treasured, lasting memories. You can also use this as an opportunity to save money on certain details and put it toward others. Here’s what you should splurge on if you’re having a smaller wedding than you originally intended. These things will help create the romantic atmosphere and fun experience you’re looking for, no matter which venue or theme you choose.

1. Wedding Dress Alterations
Walking into a wedding dress boutique and trying on gowns is an emotional experience. It’s the first time you see yourself as a bride and get flooded with pre-wedding butterflies. You should pick the dress you can’t bear to part with, but remember that even your dream dress will need alterations.
Wedding dress alterations can become costly, depending on what needs to change. On average, brides spend $50-$1,000 at a tailor’s shop, so embrace the investment. You wouldn’t want a seam popping or sewn-in cup falling out as you get ready for your ceremony.

2. Floral Arrangements
Flowers and weddings go hand in hand. Even if you decide to use faux flowers instead of real ones, go big with your floral arrangements. A little extra cash could mean that you have a dazzling flowery arbor behind your altar or stunning centerpieces on every reception table. Compare estimates with local florist shops to decide precisely how much you can splurge.

3. Late Reception Snacks
You’ll dance well into the night after everyone finishes their reception meal, which means everyone could get hungry again before they leave. Treat yourself and your guests to a bit of luxury with late-night reception snacks. Aim for comfort foods like fresh french fries or an ice cream bar. A smaller guest list means you can meet everyone’s dietary needs much more easily.

4. Extra Comfort Items
Whether you have an indoor or outdoor ceremony, it’s a thoughtful gesture to offer guests some comfort items. You might place water bottles at the entrance to your ceremony or consider beachside weather amenities like handheld fans or sunscreen. Imagine attending your wedding as a guest to think about what accessories you’d need to avoid worrying about sun exposure, cold temperatures or dehydration.

5. Your Wedding Cake
Many of the wedding cakes you’ll find online have three to five tiers, if not more. Smaller weddings typically only need a two-tiered cake or can get away with a single sheet. Put some extra wedding funds toward your cake so your chosen bakery can custom-make your dream cake design. You’ll love the photos of the cake-cutting ceremony afterward and know you ordered something extra special.
Personalize Your Wedding
Whatever you decide to splurge on will personalize your wedding in ways you might not have been able to do with a tighter budget. Think about keeping guests comfortable, ordering a special cake, or even providing gourmet reception snacks, so everyone has a little extra fun during your wedding.
