What started as a hard-to-reach escape into the Wild West in 1896, the accommodations at Castle Hot Springs preceded the formation of the state of Arizona itself. True, it’s the springs that bubble up from the Earth’s crust and trickle into quiet coves, forming natural hot tubs, that are the main attraction here. However, after experiencing a relaxing weekend in this desert oasis just about an hour outside of Phoenix, I’m convinced it’s the many additional elements that push this gem out West from simply unique to genuinely otherworldly.

The adventure begins long before check-in. A winding dirt road leads you through the Bradshaw Mountains, immediately signaling that you’re leaving the everyday behind. By the time the gates appear, there’s a palpable sense of seclusion, almost like you’ve stumbled upon a secret that few are lucky enough to know about. That feeling only deepens once inside, where time seems to slow to the rhythm of its surrounding desert (the perfect vibe for a rejuvenating honeymoon escape or wellness wedding, if you ask me!).

Castle Hot Springs is a part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and that distinction shows in thoughtful details above flashiness. Accommodations are spread across the property in detached casitas, offering privacy and quiet that’s increasingly rare in this modern world. Each room features both indoor and outdoor fireplaces, perfect for cool desert evenings, and some even include private outdoor soaking tubs that fill directly with mineral-rich hot springs water.

Speaking of the springs: the three pools, ranging in temperature from about 106 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, are available to access 24/7 and are, of course, included in your stay. In fact, the water contains naturally occurring magnesium, which feeds the property’s tap water as well, contributing to the deep sense of calm that settles in almost immediately. Is it any wonder the indigenous people of this land used to journey to these waters for medicinal purposes?

The restorative power of the waters extends into the property’s spa experience, which is designed to keep you fully immersed in the elements. Rather than being confined to a traditional clinical building, treatments take place in canvas-walled structures tucked away in the natural landscape. These private sanctuaries are situated outdoors, allowing the desert breeze to circulate freely. One of the most enchanting features is the ability to have the sliding glass doors pulled wide open during your session; as you settle into your massage or facial, the gentle, rhythmic sounds of the nearby creek provide a live soundtrack that no recording could ever replicate. It transforms a standard spa treatment into a sensory meditation, connecting you to the raw beauty of the canyon.

Dining is another standout element here. Harvest, the on-site restaurant, delivers a farm-driven, five-course tasting menu from the creative brain of Chef Knouse and team each night that easily rivals Michelin-quality experiences. Meals, gratuity, and most activities are all included in your stay, creating an ease that allows you to focus entirely on being present. The culinary philosophy extends to the property’s working farm, ensuring ingredients are the freshest they can be.

Days at Castle Hot Springs can be as active or as restful as you choose. Although if you ask me, an e-bike ride is a must for exploring the grounds, and wildlife sightings are part of the experience. (I spotted a burro casually wandering by during one ride!) Archery offers a chance to channel your inner Katniss Everdeen, while guided hikes and seasonal activities connect you even more deeply to the land. Afternoon farm tours take guests through the carefully planned rows of 300 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and florals. Evenings often include intimate live music by the hearth of the main house, adding warmth and community without ever breaking the spell of tranquility.

Sustainability is woven throughout the resort’s operations, from water usage to farming practices, reinforcing the idea that luxury and responsibility can coexist beautifully. There’s also a curated wine tasting experience available for guests who choose to partake, adding another layer to the sensory journey. Additionally available at dinner each night is the chance to taste a few of the 720+ hand-selected labels from across the globe, curated by Level 2 Sommelier Sarah Foote.

Castle Hot Springs has also become increasingly popular for full property buyouts, especially for those couples who prioritize adventure, sustainability, and wellness, but do not want to sacrifice the refinement of a luxury resort. Weddings here are hard to replicate anywhere else. Why? A farm-fresh menu tailored to the season, an inherently quiet and serene atmosphere, a kid-free environment, and (perhaps most importantly) a staff that genuinely loves what they do. That passion is felt in every interaction and detail. And why would you want any less for your destination wedding?

Pro Tip: If you are planning to fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and rent a car, be sure your rental has high clearance needed to navigate the primitive road.

In the end, Castle Hot Springs put an imprint on me that not many properties I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying have. So much so that I’m confident long after you rinse the desert dust away, the sense of otherworldly peace in the rugged American West will call you back to that dirt road and the secret waiting at the end of it.
