The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fans have no shortage of wedding destinations that feel plucked straight out of Middle-earth. While New Zealand is a dream destination for Tolkien aficionados, there are many venues that channel the adventure and magic of the trilogies. Couples can choose from filming locations, themed hotels and storybook settings that promise a Lord of the Rings–inspired wedding weekend, elopement, or even honeymoon.

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Filming Destinations

New Zealand is the official filming destination for the Lord of the Rings movies and an unofficial travel hotspot for Tolkien fans. Both the North and South islands are filled with landscapes seen throughout the six films.

Couples seeking the most authentic Lord of the Rings–inspired wedding can look no further than Hobbiton, the hobbit-hole village set where the movies were filmed. Hobbiton is located in Matamata on New Zealand’s North Island. The movie set offers several ceremony and reception options, all featured in or directly inspired by the films. For ceremonies, Handfast Glade sits in the heart of Hobbiton, with several famed hobbit holes nearby for photos, while Yard Flat is tucked away from the main set with views of the lake and the Party Tree.

Receptions can be held at The Green Dragon Inn, the pub featured in the trilogies; the Party Marquee, a larger venue with colorful decor and hillside views; or The Millhouse, a themed space with an industrial, medieval atmosphere. All three reception venues include access to Hobbiton’s professional catering team, offering meals fit for even the hungriest hobbit. Hobbiton also offers wedding photo shoot packages for couples marrying elsewhere but seeking a distinctive setting for their imagery. Nearby accommodations include The Rocks and Lakeside Health & Wellness Resort.

New Zealand’s North Island is also home to Tongariro National Park, the dramatic volcanic landscape where Mount Doom and Mordor were filmed. The park is best suited for elopements or smaller ceremonies, as permits are required and guest counts are limited. There are numerous scenic ceremony options, and both National Park Village and Whakapapa Village offer nearby accommodations.

Wellington is home to Weta Workshop, a key costume and prop designer for the Lord of the Rings franchise. While weddings are not hosted at Weta Workshop, the company offers a “One Ring”–themed wedding band set for couples who want to carry their fandom into everyday life. Wellington is located near Hutt Valley, a popular filming area that includes Harcourt Park, also known as the Gardens of Isengard in the films. Council approval and, depending on the event size, a permit are required, but the park offers ample green space for ceremonies and receptions.

Known for its abundant, untouched nature, New Zealand’s South Island served as a major filming location for both trilogies. Permits are required to marry in New Zealand’s national parks, but Fiordland National Park, featured in The Fellowship of the Ring, offers steep fjords, powerful waterfalls and glassy lakes ideal for elopements or micro weddings. Glenorchy, about 45 minutes from Queenstown, is one of the most recognizable filming areas, with snowcapped mountains and rugged terrain used to depict Dimrill Dale, Isengard and Lothlorien. The town itself is small, but Headwaters Eco Lodge and Paradise Trust both offer wedding and elopement packages that include event space, accommodations and catering.

Lord of the Rings–Themed Hotels

Just outside Knoxville, Tenn., Ancient Lore Village is a small resort inspired by the book “Bokee’s Trek: Outcasts to Inner Earth.” Set in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, the property has a wooded, fairytale feel. Ancient Lore Village is a Tolkien fan’s dream, with 14 dwellings modeled after hobbit holes that accommodate up to 48 guests. Visitors can also participate in Lord of the Rings–themed experiences such as guided tours with costumed characters, quests centered on the village’s nine guiding values and medieval-inspired games. The property offers five wedding packages, ranging from elopements and micro weddings to full buyouts for more than 200 guests. Couples can choose from several venues surrounded by lush foliage reminiscent of Rivendell and Lothlorien. The Woodland Terrace serves as a forested ceremony space beneath a canopy of trees, while receptions can take place at the Elf Nest Patio with a bird’s-eye view of the village, the Yeti Cave, Village Gardens or the Overlook at Willow Landing.

Burrowdale Inn is a hobbit-themed bed-and-breakfast set on 40 acres in Bella Vista, Calif. The inn features five hobbit hole–style homes, each accommodating up to three guests. Stays include a complimentary second breakfast delivered daily, in keeping with a hobbit’s fondness for frequent meals. Breakfast offerings stay true to the theme with dishes such as Gaffer’s Garden baked oatmeal with Shire potatoes and fruit compote, and Bilbo’s creamy baked eggs with ham, olive oil toast, and fruit salad. Wedding events are held outdoors at the center of the property and can host up to 100 guests. Spring is typically recommended for more reliable weather.

Ideal for elopements, The Shire of Montana is a themed guesthouse inspired by the cabin in The Hobbit. The property includes a hobbit hole home with a king-size bedroom and full kitchen, surrounded by a miniature fairytale village complete with tiny fairy houses and a small castle.

Located in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, the site offers scenic backdrops for photos and post-wedding outdoor adventures. Montana allows couples to self-solemnize with two witnesses present or to be married by an officiant who does not need to be ordained.

Bodmin Moor’s Wheal Tor Hotel in Cornwall offers camp-style accommodations including nine hobbit houses, seven rooms and suites, and glamping options suited for rustic, woodland weddings. The property overlooks Cornwall’s moorland landscapes from nearly 1,000 feet above the surrounding towns on Caradon Hill. Couples can choose between two ceremony sites, the Pinnacle under the Canopy or the Moorland Room, each accommodating up to 150 guests. In-house catering is available.

Located along the Tolkien Trail, Hobbit Hill is a blank-slate wedding venue with sweeping views of the English countryside. The venue accommodates up to 250 guests, and on-site wooden cabins, including The Shire, provide lodging for family and friends. The Shire features two bedrooms, a dedicated bridal suite, open living spaces and panoramic views. Set on 150 acres in Lancashire, England, Hobbit Hill offers venues such as the forested Round Wood or an indoor ceremony room overlooking the valley.

Europe and the United Kingdom are filled with lush forests, rolling hills and ancient ruins that evoke Middle-earth with minimal decor. Norway’s Lofoten Islands and Jotunheimen National Park are known for rugged peaks and fjords reminiscent of the Misty Mountains, while Slovenia’s Julian Alps offer emerald lakes and dense forests ideal for a hobbit-style celebration. Wales also delivers fantasy appeal with its stone castles and green hills.

Whether you plan to marry at an official filming site, a themed hotel or a Tolkien-inspired destination, thoughtful details can bring the world of Middle-earth into your celebration. Wooded ceremony spaces, natural wood seating and organic arches help set the tone. Design elements such as Elvish-style calligraphy on stationery and signage, along with music from the films during the ceremony and reception, offer simple ways to weave the fantasy into your wedding day.
